  1. @fl0wnsclone @nerthos @sim Black Bloc are specifically why Canada has a law that makes it so that law enforcement can request people remove face coverings at protests.  Specifically them.  They were involved in a riot in Montreal some time back.

    1. @nerthos @sim @fl0wnsclone I *think* (but don't quote me) they were also at the Toronto G20 summit.

      1. @nerthos @sim If you're at a public event where there is the threat of that violence and you DONT want to be targetted by police, the wisest thing is to remove them if you had them, or avoid them entirely.  You don't want to look like a thug.  You want to look distinct from them, so the police won't be tempted in the heat of the moment to go after you.

I think that people should be free to wear face coverings but they lose that right when they engage in criminal behaviour. When they start beating other people up, looting, setting property on fire, and general destruction. There is no way that is okay.

          1. @sim If it were necessary, sure, but generally if you're protesting for a good cause there's no need for it, as being identified isn't a bad thing. Say you're protesting for tighter regulations in mining after an environmental disaster, to give an example: why would you want to hide your identity if the cause you're championing is objectively good?

Well, you may prefer to cover your face for privacy reasons or because you prefer that style. I know what you are saying though. I just think that people should, in an ideal world, be able to dress how they want to. But then you get thugs like this that take advantage of that freedom... and I think it is then that they should have to uncover and be identified for their crimes. Mind you, covering your face does sort of defeat the purpose of a protest and it doesn't look peaceful... but I could see a need for it if there are legitimate privacy or safety concerns.

              1. @sim And in those cases yeah, it should be done, but they're not needed in the western world. As for wearing stuff that cover your face casually, that's fine, I only see an issue with it in public events.

Yeah, if there weren't thugs looking to take advantage of protests then they would be fine in the US or UK, for example. They would remain peaceful.

                  1. @sim Regarding thugs, the same should be done about them as it's done about thieves in heavy metal concerts: the crowd turns on them when they try to do their thing, and beat them up to then resume doing what they were doing in the first place.

Ouch... I wouldn't like to be doing anything thuggy at a heavy metal concert just to have lots of people team up against me. But it seems like these guys are just itching for a fight instead.

                      1. @sim Yeah, it's funny. Old ladies and all that think people go crazy at those places but despite the loud music they're some of the safest places to be in. If someone falls in the mosh pit people will give them space to get up, if anyone tries to steal or attack someone the whole crowd will try to hit them. It's great. As for these guys, yeah, but an one sided fight. They're quick to retreat if having to fight on even grounds.

That is good. I wouldn't like to be squashed in tight spaces myself, and it is good to hear that they would let you get back up if you fall over. That they would look out for people there. Good point... usually a surprise attack and retreat it seems. I saw what happened to a woman who got strayed, and even the guy who punched a guy he considered a nazi just ran off rather than facing the consequences.
