  1. @cavatina inspired me to get a nice music collection in FLAC format. I will now dedicate one folder, named "FLAC" to music in the highest possible quality. I will re-rip all my CDs as FLAC, redownload free BandCamp downloads as FLAC when possible and become a real audiophile. Wish me luck!

    1. @omni @cavatina FLAK/ALAK MUSIC MASTER RACE! I feel bad about all the music I have previously bought in mp3 format.... which I now realise is crap

      1. @purplephish20 Agreed. Also, ALAC? Ewww. As an Open-source lover, FLAC will be my format of choice. I don't like Apple stuff, at all.

        1. @omni @cavatina ALAC has been available under the Apache 2.0 license since 2011. It is, in fact, open source.

          1. @toksyuryel The more you know. I am quite surprised, though, but will still use FLAC as my format of choice.

            1. @omni Yeah me too. But it does mean that you can easily convert any ALACs you find to FLAC ^_^

          2. @toksyuryel Still not as good as Flac, so that's not gonna make me wanna use it =P. open source =/= instagood

            1. @cavatina Proprietary, however, does make something evil. /Stallman-wannabe

              1. @omni I would say this is always true in the case of things like code, formats, algorithms, methods, etc, but not necessarily true in the case of artwork. The art assets of games is a good example of something that is perfectly alright being proprietary- the engine, of course, should ideally not be proprietary.

                1. @toksyuryel True, many open-source games use proprietary art (Warsow, for example), however, some games keep everything open-source (Red Eclipse, for example), making forking the game so much easier.

            2. @cavatina Certainly. Was just correcting the misinformation, didn't say anything about its quality ☺ what it does mean of course is that you can easily convert ALAC to FLAC should you encounter something that is only available in the former.

      1. @purplephish20 FLAC*

      2. @purplephish20 ALAC is proprietary bullcrap. You shouldnt even use it on an iPod, or at all xD. FLAC is more efficient and widely supported, therefore better~. Only thing better is WAV xD

        1. @cavatina The audio quality of a WAV should be identical to that of a FLAC.

          1. @toksyuryel I am aware of this.

    3. @omni ffmpeg is quite useful for converting to flac from other lossless formats if you can't find it in flac specifically. This is what I do when I download youtube videos for their music.

      1. @toksyuryel You can get lossless music from Youtube? When did that happen? Is that the 1080p quality or what?

Friday, 03-Aug-12 16:58:25 UTC from web
        1. @omni It depends on the video. If it's an HD video then the audio quality should match or be very close to the original source audio. I personally cannot tell the difference between a 1080p youtube video and a source audio flac with my Sennheiser HD headphones.

          1. @toksyuryel This is why i use FLAC purely for archiving, when converting to other formats.
