I can read hiragana and katakana now, so I can almost tell what people like @mimorinka are saying... Except my Japanese vocabulary is still very limited so basically I only know what the words sound like, not what they mean. I guess it's a prerequisite anyway.

@hector if you're learning mostly from written materials then learning the writing system is important
