  1. @ninjawedding Roddenberry was arguably rather communistic in his beliefs.  He invisioned the Federation as having abolished the need for currencies and personal wealth by means of their enlightened society (and practically, by being able to replicate just about anything at will), and the Ferengi would have contrasted this with the worst aspects of our current society - misogyny, cut-throat capitalism, and very selfish desire-fulfillment.

    1. @maiyannah all this explains the origin and intent of their being named ferengi more and more to me.
