@minti holy smokes! she's amazing! xD
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:07:23 UTC from web-
@pony Yeah, she's nuts. XD
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:09:37 UTC from web-
@minti hehe! I never did ask, is she a big fan of the show too? Also, how did waking up go today? xD
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:11:10 UTC from web-
@pony She is, although she usually lacks internet soo.. xD And yeah, what waking up. I haven't woke up yet. ^_^
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:11:52 UTC from web-
@minti ah yeah. that laptop she borrowed have wifi? I'm guessing she might have to go to a free hotspot or whatever.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:13:34 UTC from web-
@pony Yeah, she mooches internet off a neighbor who forgot to password his wireless xD
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:14:24 UTC from web-
@minti I would make two Wi-Fi connections. One with WPA2-PSK and one without protection, and then I would wireshark the unprotected one to make sure my neighbours aren't being complete jerks when using it (and aren't doing illegal stuff I can get in trouble for) and if they aren't then I just let them use it. Why would it be wrong to share Internet? :x
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:16:10 UTC from web-
@omni because bandwidth is limited?
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:16:54 UTC from StatusNet Android-
@redenchilada Perhaps for the provider, but not for me if I buy an "unlimited" package.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:17:25 UTC from web-
@omni Also all internet in Canada is bandwidth limited now, except the indie ISPs. I could also use their network to hit their bandwidth cap and cost them tons of money xD
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:18:52 UTC from web-
@minti Why is the rest of the world's internet generally so much less cool than the US's internet?
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:21:34 UTC from web-
@pony I think Dutch Internet is pretty cool. We barely have any "fair use" crap here, and our unlimited is really unlimited, no "lower download speeds after downloading X MB"
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:22:30 UTC from web-
@omni @pony Plus the dutch's internet is generally a lot faster for a lot less. I'm paying 70$/mo for 16Mb/s, and someone I know in the netherlands is paying that for like 40Mb/s x.x
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:23:37 UTC from web-
@minti @omni that's nice! Although, in the US I usually see 100Mb/s for similar cost. Granted it barely ever actually reaches that speed despite being advertised as such xP I never paid attention to download limits, but those might or might not be an issue over here.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:27:06 UTC from web-
@pony 100Mb/s?! What?!?!?
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:27:44 UTC from web-
@minti it's apparently not all across the US yet, but idk. xP http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/02/16/fcc.100.squared.wants.100mbps.in.100m.homes/
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:29:23 UTC from web-
@pony asdf
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:32:06 UTC from web-
@minti xD yeah. but even though my computer often says 100Mbps it's actually slower.. no biggie though usually
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:39:27 UTC from web-
@pony xD It's probably 100Mbps split across all people who have it in your area or something.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:40:28 UTC from web-
@minti I have no clue. could be. :3

@omni Still, though, they're mooching off of your bandwidth and visiting places under your IP address
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:19:33 UTC from StatusNet Android-
@redenchilada I could Tor the second connection, which solves the "under my IP address" issue. Also, I could limit the connection. I personally don't really see an issue, except the time it takes to set it up properly which makes me only consider it for non-jerk neighbours.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:21:21 UTC from web-
@omni Just seems silly to spend all that time setting up something that gives you no benefit. (unless you're using it to steal their passwords, in which case go ahead!)
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:23:57 UTC from StatusNet Android-
@redenchilada >implying things have to be for your benefit to be worthwhile
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:25:12 UTC from web-
@bitshift But something like that? I could see if it was anything else.

@jla It's an interesting concept in theory, I'll give you that, but who would be paying for it all? If we simply implemented that without changing the current payment system, the result would be a few people footing the bill for a bunch of freeloaders.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:46:09 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Fair point, I'll get back to you on this.

@redenchilada As long as you're making sure they don't do anything illegal with your connection (hence the wireshark mention in @omni's post), I don't see why sharing internet would be any odder than any other act of generosity.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:28:05 UTC from web -
@redenchilada @rms also recommends opening WiFi to resist the War on Sharing.

@redenchilada I don't like living only for myself, I frequently setting stuff up to help others with no real benefit. I like helping people when I can, it gives me a good feeling. Isn't that enough benefit?

@omni Most people are too stupid to do that though, they just buy a router, leave it named "Linksys 3832" and turn on wireless XD I could go and download illegal stuff on their network and they'd get in trouble.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:17:12 UTC from web-
@minti That's why the good routers come with passwords set by default.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:18:14 UTC from StatusNet Android -
@minti That reminds me, I think you can get fined in France (and Germany?) if you don't password-protect your wireless router. These crappy laws make me feel like going to one of those offices with a cheap laptop/smartphone/whatever, hide it somewhere and let it try combinations over and over until I'm in.
Monday, 24-Sep-12 21:19:36 UTC from web-
@omni That was fixed here in May. http://ur1.ca/98r0f

@omni @sazius suggested to me once: "Best solution would be to have WPA2 secured, but e.g. password "foobar" and say "Use password foobar" in the WiFi APN name."

@jla That sounds like a good idea.
