sonic isn't actually that fast if you think about it, sometimes in the game robotnik runs away from him but sonic can't ever catch him.

@moonman Sonic lets Robotnik go on purpose. He doesn't really care about stopping Robotnik, only about saving the little animals. This also explains his playful attitude, since he has no stakes in any of his adventures
