@widget According to the preface to the HTTP 1.0 standard, it's been in wide use since 1990, so that sounds about right.

@widget Mostly extra methods and (standardized) headers if I remember rightly. Either way, given the spec itself only mentions HTTP being used since 1990, it not being a thing in '87 sounds pretty likely.
