Question: If you have a desktop and a laptop and they're running different operating systems, is that hard to manage?
-

@lovetolerateandsquee Depends on the OSses. If one of them is Linux it will probably go at least semi-fine as the Linux community has hacked together support for so many things that you generally don't have to worry. What exactly do you want to do?
Monday, 08-Oct-12 20:56:30 UTC from web-
@omni Well, my parents are probably getting a Mac Mini and I'm getting a laptop which I will be putting Linux on because Windows 8 is bloody awful.
-
@lovetolerateandsquee You still didn't tell me what you wanted to do exactly, but AFAIK Linux and MACs should have a fair share of similarities (for example, they both use the same printing system (CUPS) by default).

@omni for what it's worth, Mac doesn't need to be capitalised. Also, for what it's worth, OSX is a Unix, so it's more than a passing similarity.

@ceruleanspark Ugh, yeah, "Mac", I keep forgetting that. And yeah, but I believe OSX is based on BSD-Unix, so even though there will be similarities OSX and Linux will probably grow apart further and further over time. At least, in my mind that makes sense, but I'm probably doing something wrong there...

@omni MAC in all caps means Media Access Control.

@toksyuryel I know I just forget to non-caps Mac okay? Q.Q

@lovetolerateandsquee windows 8 is good if you have a laptop that is also a tablet.
-
@renovatedkitchen It'd still prefer GNOME3 then. It's an interface which works great with tablets, but also just really well with a "normal" PC. If they can iron out the random crashes every now and then I'd love to have it on a tablet.
Monday, 08-Oct-12 21:02:44 UTC from web-
@omni my windows 8 works perfectly for me.
-
@renovatedkitchen I'm talking about the GNOME3 crashes, not the Windows 8 one. Besides the BSoD I got during the first installation, an hour of messing around with Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine didn't have any serious stability results, I just hate to use it :P
Monday, 08-Oct-12 21:04:57 UTC from web-
@omni I know. I was saying my win 8 does not crash vs gnome 3. I like what they did
-
@renovatedkitchen I don't like Windows 8 that much. The wanna-be tiling interface isn't as flexible as I'm used to with tiling interfaces (awesome-wm, for example) and when it comes to visual effects and beauty, I still like GNOME3 more and that CAN be personalised just a tad bit more than "choose a colour". Useless link to show you what it looks like: http://www.gnome.org/gnome-3/

@omni Nothing beats E17 in visual effects and beauty.
Monday, 08-Oct-12 21:11:49 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I personally think E17 is too flashy, and the default themes awful to my eyes, but if I look at the animation quality it can do on even the weakest of hardware: Holy Pony!
Monday, 08-Oct-12 21:12:44 UTC from web-
@omni I used to run it on a 450 MHz Pentium 3 and 448 MB of RAM. It actually performed better than XFCE.
Monday, 08-Oct-12 21:14:27 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I'm not surprised at all, E17 has always been extremely quick.
