So, Microsoft is to retire MSN in the first quarter of 2013 and to merge it with Skype. Time to start searching for a workaround to keep using the client.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:19:41 UTC from web-
@nerthos Why would you /want to/? The client is the worst part of the experience.
-
@ceruleanspark The newer ones, yeah. The 2009 version that I'm using is great.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:23:11 UTC from web -
@ceruleanspark Also the vanilla client lacks functions, but with the plus addon, it's the most complete chat client I've seen.

@nerthos Uses Gmail or something already.

@greenenchilada No, those are crap. I'm literally saying "I want to keep using the client"
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:25:32 UTC from web-
@nerthos Never used the 2009 version.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:26:42 UTC from web-
@greenenchilada It's great.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:27:13 UTC from web-
@nerthos Meh. Gmail is okay with me.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:29:23 UTC from web-
@greenenchilada I've been using MSN for a crapload of years. Why would I even want to switch?
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:31:12 UTC from web-
@nerthos I don't know. Gmail is pretty easy to use, and also pretty easy to make multiple accounts and have them all synced together.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:34:02 UTC from web-
@greenenchilada I don't want "easy to use", I want the functions MSN has.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:36:50 UTC from web-
@nerthos Alright.

@nerthos What's interesting, from my perspective at least, is that MS is actually doing the opposite of what they claim they are. The actual IM network that supports Skype has been killed. The Skype client actually logs into the WLM servers now.
-
@ceruleanspark Yeah, I know. They just want an excuse to merge the 100m MSN users with the 280m Skype users.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:36:12 UTC from web-
@nerthos I think it's a combination of MS's lethal blindness to markets beyond the US, and brand perception. In the US, WLM is considered "outdated" and past its prime, wheras Skype is not.
-
@ceruleanspark Still, Skype sucks as an IM client. It's great for calls and other stuff, but it lacks options when it comes to text.

@nerthos What's of a bigger concern to me is that I make daily use of features that just plain aren't offered by any other IM networks.
-
@ceruleanspark Like what?
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:41:48 UTC from web-
@nerthos I have a windows live group that uses the shared chat, message board, calendaring and group email features to coordinate gaming and streaming activities. The stuff under the "Groups" heading, which they seem to just be planning to axe outright.
-
@ceruleanspark Oh, that. I never use it, but I see how it could be a function you would want to keep. For me it's mostly about custom smileys, conversation logging, the handwriting option and custom.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:45:07 UTC from web-
@nerthos It's actually pretty cool. Like a skype group convo backed onto a bunch of scheduling and message board features.
-
@ceruleanspark I tried it once, the platform itself looked nice, but the other users of the group were a bunch of morons so I just left.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:47:13 UTC from web -
@ceruleanspark Guess I'll try using a chinese proxy, since China will keep MSN.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:48:06 UTC from web-
@nerthos I don't think they'll actually stop the client connecting from non-chinese IP's. It'll just never be updated again.
-
@ceruleanspark If it's like that, then it will be awesome. I'm using a really outdated client, from 2009, since the newer ones are awful and mutilated.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:50:06 UTC from web-
@nerthos I'm running a completely fresh install of the latest version on a freaking solid state drive and it still hangs for 10-15 seconds if you try to maximise the contact list.
-
@ceruleanspark Actually I think the newer versions are slower than the older ones. Speaking about that, I need to upload the offline installer for the version I'm using.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:53:03 UTC from web-
@nerthos Oh it's miles worse, which is funny, because MS has built it using their "recommended" techniques for high application performance, like using the GPU to composit the UI and splitting IO threads from the interface and the like.
-
@ceruleanspark Why not downgrade to a better version?
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:59:28 UTC from web-
@nerthos because I'm lazy and think it's funny. Also I've a-patched all the crap out of this one now.
-
@ceruleanspark Oh. I literally can't stand the interface of versions >15
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 17:02:01 UTC from web-
@nerthos Do the earlier versions have jump-list support?
-
@ceruleanspark IDK, if you describe what it does, maybe I'll be able to answer.
Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 17:07:59 UTC from web-
@nerthos You can control the app by right clicking its start menu icon. Change your status, sign out, etc.
-
@ceruleanspark Oh, yeah, that's been there since at least 2006. Sadly the 2009 version I'm using opens as a normal task bar icon on Windows 7, rendering that function useless. It's the only thing I miss on W7. (the 2009 14 version was designed for XP, and it was the last one released for that OS, so it has that problem when running on 7)

@ceruleanspark I hate my SSD. When watching movies, it hiccups and shows its constantly reading for a minute, then resumes. Sometimes does that for a while
-
@renovatedkitchen Either your SSD or your motherboards drive controller is dying. That literally cannot happen with a healthy one.
-
@ceruleanspark I have the OCZ Vertex 3 (or 2. I forget now). But apparently it's a common problem with them

@nerthos But then you'll have to learn Chinese.

Wednesday, 28-Nov-12 16:50:46 UTC from web-
@nerthos I'm joking. I'm not that stupid.

@nerthos Also, this client can be set to save HTML logs of all conversations, a function I always use.
