Hey... I'm Fluttershy. I saw this site and made an account. I hope you don't mind...

@widget As in, on this site, or in this fandom?
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:22:26 UTC from web -
@widget Oh. Well. That's kind of difficult to fix, because the main reason those people left is because... those people left. One goes, then follows those who came to talk to the ones who left, and so on. And then people say "Hey I don't come anymore because the people I liked left" Sure, some of the most loved guys left because one or other individual decided to be a prick, but that's not the main reasn. The only way to fix it is to convince everybody to come back at once and give it a try.

@widget Well, I never go to deep on the fandom. I'm more of a guy who likes watching pony and likes to talk to most of the people who frequent this place than a brony in the regular sense of the word. I honestly couldn't tell what the fandom has or doesn't have.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:27:15 UTC from web-
@nerthos That, of course, whilst adressing the problem of "does this fandom suck or is it just a matter of perception?" issue, doesn't change the fact that I probably won't watch the documentary just because there's few things I find more boring than listening to people's personal stories on interviews.

@widget As best as I can tell, things around here started to "go south" in the post season 1 gap. The site having nobody at the wheel during one of the fandoms most important periods, during which it tried to define what it meant to be in this fandom when the show wasn't airing, left it directionless and caused it to lose a lot of traction. Other sites implemented contests, reading groups, or even "Go back and re-watch old episodes on a shared schedule to generate discussion" type deals, wheras RDN just had tumbleweed. If you want to restart the sites traction, it needs to have more of a call to action than "What's up." in the header. I've been thinking about the idea of implementing weekly discussion topics or something so that if someone comes on and the site is dead, they can answer that question and maybe start an activity cascade.

@ceruleanspark @widget. weekly topics would be nice I think

@pony what about like a voice chat room?
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:43:52 UTC from StatusNet iPhone-
@renovatedkitchen bandwidth and hosting costs go boom
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:45:17 UTC from StatusNet iPhone -
@renovatedkitchen that'd be like Skype basically I'm guessing. Not a bad idea. The only problem would be moderating it. :P
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:54:37 UTC from web-
@pony I find it easy to moderate the Skype calls, I have very few rules though
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:55:50 UTC from StatusNet iPhone-
@renovatedkitchen heh. well therein lies the challenge for RDN voice chat
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:03:38 UTC from web-
@pony It's really not hard. I could pose an example durring my next call. Or have two rooms. One regular an one explicit
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:06:01 UTC from StatusNet iPhone-
@renovatedkitchen I honestly enjoy the RDN environment as it is though. Voice chat is something I'd only really feel comfortable with over Skype

@widget I think the two reasons people don't stay are a) the conversations going on usually take on a personal nature. Not in the way of content, but in the phrasing. Since all the regulars know eachother for a long time, the conversations tend to be more "Friends talking" than "Random guys touching a common topic on a public place". I try to at least start conversations with new users whenever I can. More users should try to take the iniciative on that one. And b), as @thatonestocking said, people are usually confused as to what they should do, as evidenced by the posts by most newponies lacking context or not being adressed at any user.

@widget I mean generally when a new user hits the site, the timeline is a bunch of total strangers discussing a totally unfamiliar topic that is, unless you've achieved 4chan levels of lurking, completely impenetrable to human beings. It's cliquey and uninviting. The cliques need busting, and the best way to do that is provide common ground. Maybe even enlist welcomepony to, instead of random greetings, introduce the topic of the week to newcomers so they have something to say right oout the gate.

„@ceruleanspark I mean generally when a new user hits the site, the timeline is a bunch of total strangers discussing a totally unfamiliar topic that is, …, completely impenetrable to human beings.“ That wasn't my impression when I joined not so long ago.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:12:00 UTC from web-
@kamikaze I think it depends on the new user.

@widget but what if I want to use the alt-fire?
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:47:26 UTC from StatusNet iPhone -
@widget Cerulean's ideas sound as a minumum woth a try. You could put a topic of the day on the site's notice, or even have the site decide the next day's topic. Also one of the users could organize a synchtube and go over the whole show, since lots of people here haven't seen a season 1 episode in a year or more. Having many of the users watch the episodes at the same time would start discussions about the episodes in question, much like when a new episode airs.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:48:00 UTC from web-
@nerthos I sould do the synchtube thing myself if not because in four days I'll start college again and I'll only have my netbook and crappy wi-fi.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:50:31 UTC from web-
@nerthos *would

@widget "Current activities" button, showing a pop-up

@widget Hmm. Well it's not my field of expertise really.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:57:17 UTC from web -
@widget No, just with the one currently going on, and next ones. For example if there's an episode airing, an RDN skype call going on, etc. Allow mods to change it in case something comes up without much anticipation.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 07:59:00 UTC from web -
@widget Yeah, that could work.

@widget I should dream about torrenting. Imagine how many things I could torrent in the dream realm.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:07:02 UTC from StatusNet iPhone -
@widget it would take up too much bandwidth anywho
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:08:23 UTC from StatusNet iPhone -
@widget that's true. Would it greatly affect the refresh/upload speeds? I've noticed that the refreshing barely uses any Internet from when I've had a poor connection so I'm guessing no
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:11:21 UTC from StatusNet iPhone -
@widget See if you integrated that to a secondary RDN timeline it would cripple the activity problem.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:13:06 UTC from web -
@widget RDN Teamspeak server?
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:14:11 UTC from web -
@widget Faie enough.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:15:28 UTC from web -
@widget I don't know. I never used Mumble. I don't even know what it is.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:15:54 UTC from web -
@widget I'm asking myself whether that would increase or merely divide the activity on RDN.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:17:36 UTC from web-
@pony The regular activity wouldn't really be affected. It would add an extra branch of activity so it's not a bad thing.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:18:42 UTC from web -
@pony what if it was an option on the timeline. So that you can join a voice chat while reading/talking about the public timeline
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:19:24 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
-
-
@widget So it's basically the same as Teamspeak but better.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:17:46 UTC from web -
@widget @renovatedkitchen @nerthos "Hey get on voice chat." "Can't right now." meh... it probably wouldn't hurt anything, but since I probably wouldn't be able to/want to use it I can see myself and others like me being left out of conversations that might have taken place on the public Timeline where I'd be able to participate. Even if it does divide users, if it brings in new ones then it'd be worth it.
Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:27:48 UTC from web-
@pony it is a tough call

Thursday, 24-Jan-13 08:35:16 UTC from web -
@widget having it local will make the division more pronounced maybe, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea regardless.
