  1. OK... The external drive with my private stuff isn't working in any way possible. It isn't readable using the USB controller, nor it is readable directly via SATA. There were a lot of photos, some family videos and most importantly all the project files I made when I was rendering 3D landscapes using "Terragen".

    1. @broniebrown I am sorry man. Stuff like this happens, and it is never pretty... ( it can even happen if you store everything redundant... so... )

      1. @critialcloudkicker True. I'm a cheap ass otherwise I had a NAS with a RAID6 a long time ago ^^.

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:14:07 UTC from Choqok
        1. @broniebrown RAID6 is no safer than a simple mirror array... But it is cheaper when you plan to use it for a LONG time... For personal use the data need will grow so exponentially fast that it is not worth buying 4+ disks of 2TB when you can buy 2 new hard disks bearing the same cost but trippling or quadrippling your storage space in a matter of 3-4 years.

          1. @critialcloudkicker For personal data like photos I think a RAID6 is more appropriate than a RAID1 (or RAID10). If someone says one word about "cloud storage" I'll kick him/her in his/her buttocks as hard as I can.

            1. @broniebrown So is RAID more for data security or efficiency? What's the benefits over typical storage?

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:25:59 UTC from web
              1. @einhorn Usually RAIDs are more for data security than performance. A RAID0 can be boosting a bit performance when writing and a RAID1 when reading. The others are less performant because every time you write you have to calculate the parity and update it on the disks.

                1. @broniebrown I'm just curious: Why are you using the German word for unicorn as your user name?

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:42:51 UTC from Choqok
                  1. @broniebrown I've been learning German in my free time and I noticed that the name was untaken, so I figured it would work out. I actually watched the whole first season of MLP entirely in German, lol.

                    1. @einhorn Oh dear. You poor soul. You must suffered a lot watching this. I can't stand the German synchro. "Winter Ade Tag" has blown my brain away so bad was this song. I'm still suffering from that.

                      1. @broniebrown Yeah, that was a little weird, lol. I take it you speak German?

                        1. @einhorn I live in Germany. I know German since I'm born.

                          1. @broniebrown You speak English very well.

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:51:39 UTC from web
                            1. @einhorn I had English in school since the 4th grade. Also I read a lot English texts on the Internet and I watch a lot of series in English. At the uni there are also several computer science lectures that are in English.

                              1. @broniebrown That is so smart. I wish our schools in the US would encourage a foreign language at such a young age. I started learning German when I was roughly 15 and I speak it better than anyone I know where I live, but I still sound like a caveman if I actually try to use it with a native speaker.

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:56:55 UTC from web
                                1. @einhorn I second that... I could probably make myself more understandable with someone else who knows sign-language though ( The Dutch and the German sign languages are near ideantical )

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:58:43 UTC from web
                                2. @einhorn Depending on which school path you take in Germany you have to learn a second foreign language, usually it is French. (with the option to learn a third depending on the school (mine offered Latin, French, and Italian). Also I know Polish.

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:59:45 UTC from Choqok
                                  1. @broniebrown So you know German, English, and Polish then?

                                    1. @einhorn German, English, French, Polish, C++, Java, a bit Pascal, PHP, Python, and Ruby.

                                      2. @broniebrown Lol, I see what you did there. I've always wondered what sorts of things are programmed in Ruby.

                                        1. @einhorn A friend of mine used Ruby (on Rails) to program a website with a database connection. He had to implement a system for sending and managing homework assignments.

                              2. @broniebrown I've been having trouble finding season 2 in German. Watching shows seems like a good idea.

                            1. @critialcloudkicker @einhorn I don't know. Perhaps someone had thought that the Dutch intro is better than the German intro. Personally I like the Dutch a bit more than the German intro.

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:55:46 UTC from Choqok

              2. @critialcloudkicker I don't like it. I don't want to pay ransom money to a cloud storage provider and clogging my Internet upload capacity. 90kb/s upload isn't very much if you have gigabytes of data.

Wednesday, 14-Aug-13 14:41:07 UTC from Choqok
                1. @broniebrown I do honestly prefer to have my data where I can hold it. Though cloud computing is pretty convenient, it's a bit scary.

        1. @einhorn That's what I'm asking myself. I don't know. Is it because they want to work in Germany? Is it because they hear random German words in some anime and want to learn more about it. Is it because they love Nazi Germany? I don't know.

          1. @broniebrown It might just be one of those engineering languages. I think the USA, Germany, and Japan have been the leading countries in the world in engineering, so I think there's a lot of money associated with the languages.

    6. @randomwonderbolt I have a couple of years under my belt in high school and a good deal of vocabulary. I'd probably say intermediate? When I watch season 1 of MLP, I usually understand 60-90% of what they say, but the language in the show is typically pretty simple, too.
