Oh boy, Evan Prodromou (of #StatusNet / #Pump / #OStatus fame) showed up on #Diaspora's GitHub Issue tracker and asked that we support #ActivityPub
It's a nice thought, and hopefully we can do that in the long term. But some part of me is apprehensive about the spec and the leg work it will take to support it.
There are certain unanswered questions, such as "Will ActivityPub support Diaspora's federated privacy controls?"
-
@euphoria @yellowfrog #Mastodon and #Diaspora can't directly federate, although both can federate with #Friendica (it's complicated)
-
@vruz You're on a network where everything is public from the start, which designed that way from its beginnings a decade ago. It seems strange to expect that no one will index your posts at some point because of this and because there are already federated networks designed with privacy in mind, such as #Diaspora and #Friendica, both of which are quite different from #GNU_Social and #Mastodon. @sina

I will upgrade https://diasporapod.no to the latest version tonight, starting around 20:00 - I will also take full snapshot backup of the server.

@deadsuperhero @maiyannah I think #Diaspora and #Mastodon devs have talked about sharing a Ruby gem for protocol support @gargron
-
@thatbrickster #Diaspora , #Friendica and #Hubzilla form the #Federation (federating with #Diaspora's variant of the #OStatus protocols)
-
@cdllm it offers a *how* but one that didn't include private messages which was essential to #Diaspora design goals

@kevinmarks #GNUSocial and #Diaspora use the same #OStatus protocol set but they implement them so differently they can't interoperate (yet)
-
@deadsuperhero do you know if the #Tent fork of #Diaspora ever went anywhere? I saw your comment on the wiki page

@deadsuperhero @gargron OMG yes! So, for example, #Diaspora and #Mastodon could use the same gem for doing federation, sharing the dev work

Decided to write a quick guide on how to chat with users when you have a account on https://diasporapod.no .
The guide can be found here on this link:

@deadsuperhero @gargron TBD I'm not sure why #Diaspora moved to #Loomio or #Discourse. Why not dogfood your own discussion app?
-
@deadsuperhero do you want me to find the original #Diaspora crowdfunding page on #KickStarter? It was *explicitly* pitched as a FB killer
-
@deadsuperhero but #Diaspora media coverage was #crowdfunding hype. They were never offered VC funding due to being overtly anti-#FarceBook
-
@schestowitz welcome! I've been cross-following you here for a while from your #Diaspora feed
