I'm not sure how you would know if your timeline is "too white" ... other than a few people who talk about their ancestry or use (what we assume is) their facial image as their avatar, a person using #GNU_Social / #Friendica / #Mastodon / #Red_Matrix / #Hubzilla could be of any ethnic group, from any location around the world.
That's actually one of the best things about online communications. I may talk with you for years before I realize you are a member of $RACE and $NATIONALITY or that you live in $COUNTRY. We get the opportunity to build relationships without all that garbage in the way. -

Hi, I'm @mmn, maintainer of GNUsocial. I reacted when it was written that "many people on gnusocial are angry" and wish to say that !GNUsocial has only love and appreciation for #Mastodon and #ActivityPub.
I believe cooperation is important for libre software and the federated social web. I believe our plural and diverse community should embrace and encourage contributors and development. Any progress we want to make - regardless of anyone's preferred technology - is impeded by hostility and empowered by friendship.
So I want to say thank @cwebber @gargron et al. for all the hard work you actively put into ActivityPub. It's awesome that so many users get in touch with !fs via open protocols.Monday, 11-Sep-17 08:50:08 UTC from social.umeahackerspace.se at 63°49'42"N 20°15'34"E in context Repeated by akionux -
@chriswere @elizafox doesn't #Mastodon already allow for selective federation with other servers? I hear it has implemented #ActivityPub
-
@rbonifaz @sri unless something changed in the last couple of months, #Mastodon uses #OStatus, not #ActivityPub, and doesn't support groups
-
Has anyone actually checked and monitored how well the #federation #network actually works? Are posts visible on other hubs and what's the delivery #latency. Etc. I'm just curious. Is there any automated #monitoring / #statistics site for this information? #gnusocial #mastodon

@cwebber The only reason !GNUsocial doesn't have #ActivityPub yet is because I have a fulltime job and noone else has been up for the task .]
Though I'm pretty sure it'd still just be the 100% public parts of AP that would be used/promoted, as I'm pretty much convinced there's no such thing as privacy in the social sphere anyway and anyone using "private" communication in an environment like !GNUsocial or #Mastodon is fooled either by the platform, the administrator or other users. (anything accessible via a web browser isn't made for privacy) -

@xrevan86 Less than 10% for #AndStatus. Maybe because recently incompatibility of Android 4 with some #Mastodon instances was discovered... Do you use such device?
-
@infO_Overlord Different instances of #Mastodon and #GnuSocial have different subsets of the same conversation. This is by design of the federated network...
This is exactly why e.g. I simultaneously use several @AndStatus accounts at different instances. #AndStatus application helps me see copies of the same messages at different instances, choose as what user/at which instance I want/can take part in the discussion, collapse duplicates visually in a timeline. -
There are a lot of things I love about #Mastodon, but there are a lot of things about it recently that are just killing my enthusiasm. I really didn't want to admit it to myself for the longest time, but I can't bear much more of it.
The mangoposting is cancer, and there's so much of it - the GNU Social half of the fediverse actually does it pretty well, but the Mastodon half is mostly awful. Post-ironic-memes aren't funny. Slightly misspelling words intentionally doesn't mean you're part of some elaborate in-joke. The hidden content jokes are stale and everyone's using the same joke templates from Tumblr circa two years ago. On top of that, the meta-discourse and moderator drama is getting so bad that it sucks the fun out of the entire timeline.
I've met a lot of great people through Mastodon, and I think it's a great app overall. I particularly like that it works well on my phone, so that I can engage with the fediverse on the go. That's awesome!
There's just too many goddamned hipsters, and they're the worst offenders. They''re just perpetuating the worst parts of #Twitter and #Tumblr, and the political discourse on there has all of the depth of a Facebook comment thread.
I shouldn't feel this crotchety. I'm sorry. -

most of whom know *nothing* about #Mastodon's history, or how it works, and haven't made the first bit of effort to find out who they are, look carefully at Trump's executive orders, and who they're transferring power to
