Someone needs to explain to the Mastodonites what microblogging is about, I don't think they got the memo. First, Gargron tries to implement private messaging, now Mastodonites argue against indexing/archiving.
Here's the thing: if you don't want something to be read by anyone, DON'T MICROBLOG IT. Especially on a protocol that federates with strangers!- internetturtle, csaurus, dtluna and mmn repeated this.

Just read an article (saw it on @taknamay's feed) about how ssh got port 22. Went in expecting, you know, a good story, but it was really just "I sent an email to the IANA guy asking if I could get port 22 and he said yes."

Also the old laptops I have are tough as nails, the cheapo ones I'm looking at seem a bit fragile according to reviews.

You know...it occurs to me that the Ghostbusters being a private agency is probably not a viable solution.
The service they provide is more of a public safety and infrastructure issue; having to get paid by clients is not a very effective way of supporting such an endeavour - it'd be rather like how firefighting was done in Colonial America, before the institution of public firefighters.
