@mcnalu you could check the board for leaking capacitors or if you still have the NiCd battery. Leakage will destroy the board. !Amiga

@solariiknight Microsoft or a Google background software ("updater") could listen to the microphone. OTOH it looks a bit like a hoax to me.

someone on here a few months back recommended a free language learning org. they refused all corporate sponsorship and was dedicated to free accessible language learning, and seemed to teach differently than other methods i'd used. i went through a bunch of their arabic lessons on youtube (but I remember you could download the lessons too). and i can't remember the name of the org. searching isn't helping. i lost my bookmarks in The Great Phone Crash of 2018.
anyone know what i'm talking about?

@storm I think Google will just discontinue POP/IMAP support some day. People will have to use their website or the proprietary Gmail app.

They are turning it into another walled garden. Get out fast!

@lohang probably Gmail's userbase won't care, sadly. Or they will even say: "new features? that can't be bad."

@cwebber the reason I heard 15 yrs ago was: generating many GB of really random data takes longer than piping zeros through the encryption

@vinzv Well, that's depressing. Hypothetically speking, if someone were to step in, would you transfer the website to that person?
On a side note, I guess if anyone's interested, !loadaverage has an open registration… -
Ein Nachtrag dazu: es gibt erste Interessenten für eine Übernahme des Servers. Sobald sich hier etwas Konkretes ergibt lasse ich es euch wissen.
===
An addendum: there are first interested parties for a takeover of the server. As soon as something concrete turns up here, I'll let you know. -
Thanks you for the awesome service you've provided!

I'm working on an improved GS data export tool with the goal of collecting as much data as possible. Any user can run this on a GS instance where backups are disabled. Should be done soon.

The first version is live! https://github.com/dansup/gs-exporter #gnusocial #exporter

I've pushed the repo to git.gnu.io too if you don't want to use Github. https://git.gnu.io/dansup/gs-exporter

@arturovm big problem nowadays: too much distraction. Maybe we should have kept dial-up modems where you were either online or offline.

My MacBook Air is compliant enough with UEFI to at least boot memtest86 as \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI
(I hate the excessively glossy screen, even with something that cuts the glare)

@lightone I have spoke with the lead dev and it is resolved. I am really excited to help improve the software. I think this will be a good summer for the fediverse. ????

Let's do a little experiment. It's obviously biased by my relative participation in each, but I'm comparing the reach of twitter, facebook, Diaspora, pump, G+, and GNU Social (plus anything that can talk directly to it...that is not via NavierStokes).
Please like this if you see it. Obviously, if you want more people to like it, then you share it, but I'm only going to count likes.- Scribus likes this.
- mcscx, boneidol and ghostdancer and 2 others repeated this.
-
Here are the final numbers
GNU Social/Mastodon: 49
pump.io: 31
Facebook:26
Diaspora: 15
G+: 7
Twitter: 0
What's interesting is that on Diaspora, pump, and GNU Social, I all got actual comments about how the study was being conducted. I got literally zero comments on twitter or G+. There's all sorts of bias in this, but I have more "friends" on facebook by an order of magnitude and significantly more on twitter than the free platforms. So, it seems like people join the proprietary networks and just don't use them very much.
