  1. @kingcarcinopony think of it as winning a lottery each time you interact with someone new. you can accept the lump sum, getting it all at once, or you can be paid a much larger um over a longer period of time. instant gratification versus larger gains

  2. @kingcarcinopony yeah, but it's kind of like popping bubblewrap you need. fun while it lasts but then if you ever need the stuff you won't have it. Plus it's exchanging potentially years of enjoyment for just a few seconds of enjoyment.

  3. fair enough but don't think that makes it acceptable to be mean all the time. It's not us bing sensitive, it's us being normal when a jerk always acts like a jerk to recognize that he is a jerk and not like him very much as a result.

  4. @kingcarcinopony I'm just saying humans come with more than one setting. you dont' have to be mean for the sake of being mean. civility is a choice, not set at birth, after all.

  5. and while I'm on the "love and tolerance" I should say, No, you shouldn't act like that's some sort of religious statement to you, and don't go doing dumb stuff like dissupting the nearest computer store by changing all the wallpapers, but just because "love and tolerance" shouldn't be taken too seriously doesn't give you free reign to act like a jerk to everyone. We can still try to be nice without the love and tolerate as a rule going on. it's called being civil. there's a middle ground between foolish and mean.

  6. okay, since the post on EQdaily is all stirred up and impossible to get a word in edgewise there, I should just say here, why do people act like there is only one way to give criticism, and that is to be a complete dick? I mean, in the thread, there were complaints about people whining just because someone said something less than positive. it's not about that though, it was the way they said it. no matter how valid your point might be, "those fat pizza faced basement dwellers shouldn't even come to these things,." is nt an acceptable way to criticize. "We should at least remember to take care of out grooming and hygine" and "You should work on how you dress yourself. it's frankly embarrassing as it is right now." are. The people whining about the former are't being whiny wimps who take "love and tolerate" too seriously, they are responding to how much of a dick you really are acting like.

  8. @rarityfan mad world and? The point is the two songs playesd back to back being WAY much more effective than each on their own.

  9. New topic! Songs never to listen to back to back! "Exile Vilify ~ The National" and "Chasing Cars ~ Snow Patrol" "On Melancholy Hill and El Manana ~ The Gorrillaz" now it's your turn to add to the list.

  14. @rarityfan not so bad anymore compared to what it used to be, most of the pollution is settled in the bottom, but with the river all flooded, it is no doubt stirred up.

  15. @rarityfan heh, thanks. I'm sure they will be fine in the worst case, really. it's not like a sea flood, so it won;t engulf all of the city. but at the sme time, the flood will have the same current as the river, possibly making it more dangerous. anyone who has ever seen the Missouri river would know never to swim in it if you don't like drowning and/or getting mercury poisoning.

  17. @rarityfan well, depends, one of the levees protects an entire town. if it were to break, the entire town of Carter Lake Iowa would be wiped out, as would be the only major airport in a long while

Sunday, 07-Aug-11 05:38:01 UTC from web in context
  18. @rarityfan I live up in the hills in Iowa, so I'm safe. too far from the river to get flooded myself

  28. @rarityfan don't know how to pay my student loan bill. honestly don't know. the letter gave no instructions other than "use the enclosed envelope" which I have lost because I am incompetent. I don't know if I'm supposed to write down something and put it in the envelope with it or if I am supposed to just let the check have all that information... but then again I can't find my checks so I am ondering if they accept money orders
