@awl I've never had panniers with that bungee thing at the bottom. I've always used the Ortlieb ones since I ride in bad weather a lot, and full waterproofing has been my primary concern.
Seems like they'd be less likely to bounce off the lower part of the rack. -

@awl It's good finding ways to make the shorter wheelbase of the bike you have work.
The first bike I did touring on had 440mm chainstays, and my two main touring mainstays today have 450mm ones, so heel-strike isn't much of an issue for me if I choose to mount bags in the back. -

I've done a couple of rides along the highway out there, and am pretty excited to see an alternate route like that go in. I've always enjoyed gravel rail trails, even more than the asphalt ones most of the time. -
