  1. Does anyone use or know how to use Ubuntu?

    1. @seanthesheep Yeah, I use it. What do you need?

      1. @scribuscooper @Rotation Do you know how to get it to run programs you've downloaded?

Sunday, 02-Oct-11 18:32:57 UTC from web
        1. @seanthesheep Depends on what you mean by "programs you've downloaded." If it's anything .exe that's a Windows executable and you'd need Wine or a virtual machine or somesuch.

          1. @scribuscooper It's .deb

            1. @seanthesheep Alright, then. If my memory serves me, a double-click ought to open up the package manager. Maybe it'll be a right-click & menu option...

              1. @scribuscooper <Insert "I'll manage your package joke> So do I want Ubuntu Software Centre, Archive Manager, or Other Application...

Sunday, 02-Oct-11 18:43:14 UTC from web
                1. @seanthesheep I think Ubuntu Software Centre ought to do it. I usually just stick to packages straight from the repositories, so I may be wrong. If I am wrong, anyone feel free to step in and correct me! :p

                  1. @scribuscooper Rewhatsitories? Also, it says get software, and this is the part where I always get stuck, because whenever I press something, it starts loading and never stops.

                    1. @seanthesheep Repositories. If you just fire up Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager it'll pull the selected packages from the internet.

                    2. @seanthesheep Also, drat. Um... Might try searching online for problems with the specific package you'd downloaded?

                      1. @scribuscooper Maybe. The thing is, it happens with anything I try to download. Chrome, Skype, anything.

                        1. @seanthesheep I think most of those should be in the repositories, try Synaptic & search for them.

                          1. @scribuscooper Will do.

                          2. @scribuscooper When I tried to open it, I got an error.

                            1. @seanthesheep Huh. Something about there already being an instance of it open? Or something else entirely?

                              1. @scribuscooper Something about something with no Package:header and a problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists.gb.archives.gb.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty-updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages and it couldn't be parsed or opened

                                1. @seanthesheep Eugh, I don't quite know about that one. Mostly, when I hit an error message I Google it and find it's already been solved.

                                    1. @seanthesheep Just copy/paste the exact error message and see what the entirety of human knowledge has to say about it! Um, but watch out for the slander and whatnot... It is, after all, the internet.
