@cabal I say go for it. Fight the good fight.

@cabal @purpletinker Are you going to black out the website on Jan 18?
-
@the20percent As far as I am aware it is business as usual
-
@the20percent The site isn't going to go down in protest, sorry.
-
@redenchilada crap
-
-
@lyokotravels about what?
-
@the20percent What's wrong with it? I see no point to take down a means of communication just because a bill in Congress upsets you. Besides, a good chunk of us are outside the US.
-
@redenchilada true enough... I must have spent too much time on reddit then :/
-
@the20percent I heard something with blocking RDN?
-
@lyokotravels Oh, no... There's gonna be a massive internet protest going on on the 18th... Wikipedia and a bunch of other websites are gonna go down for 12 hours that day to protest SOPA and PIPA
-
@thatonepony There something wrong with being on reddit?
-
@thatonepony I revoke one internet from you
-
@lyokotravels There's a lot of sights going dark to protest SOPA. Good idea, but more likely to inconvenience a ton of people than anything else. The 18th is most likely going to be a pain in the flank than anything.
-
@the20percent ahh. ok ... STOP SOPA & PIPA !!
-
@redenchilada I MUST SEE THIS
-
@eaglehooves ahh... I see.
-
@cabal Look, I know you want to protest, but... no. It's a dumb idea.
-
@cabal well, I guess that's something to consider :/
-
@cabal He said that because there's a lot of people outside the US, and also that we shouldn't shut down a means of communication just to oppose a bill, at least that's what he told me earlier :/
-
@cabal Because you're responding to a censorship bill by denying service to your members.
-
@cabal I understand what will happen. I also know that protesting like that doesn't do anyone any good.
-
@cabal I'm actually for the protest, not against it.
-
@cabal Now you're getting it.
-
@cabal The problem with a protest like that is that the ones that need to actually see it don't usually bother visiting websites.
-
@cabal Well technically yes it would not help. It seems kind of backwards to show your disapproval by doing exactly what the bill intends to do angering those who may use it.
-
@cabal That's besides the point. You're against the bill because it would hinder access to this site, so _why are you protesting by removing access to this site?_
-
@redenchilada it would show people what it would be like to remove access to a website, before it becomes a permanent thing, and when we have bit of time to stop the bill, and makes it a personal change. Its to show you how inconvenient life will be, so you'll be personally motivated to stop it
-
@cabal Ok, fine. I would be upset. What are you trying to prove with this?
-
@cabal If they're not sensible enough to realize the direness of the situation without resorting to extreme measure such as shutting down a site, why would you believe they're going to be sensible enough to call or write to the people who matter instead of just complaining to you for shutting it down.
-
@the20percent The problem, though, is that most of us already understand the implication the bill will have, if it gets passed. I still don't see the point.
-
@cabal No, it's just pretty stupid and I think most people would be kiwied at you.
-
@redenchilada some people still don't, actually... and also, most people aren't motivated to stop it.
-
@cabal First sign of paranoia: taking the first opportunity to steer the conversation into SWAT action.
-
@cabal What does that have to do with the question? (Which I admit was accidentally posted as a statement.)
-
@the20percent The government doesn't need additional motivation to stop it. They've got legions screaming at their doors already. It won't pass, I guarantee, and if it somehow does it'll be because it was cut down to the point where it doesn't actually affect anyone.
-
@redenchilada Hells, just tell congress that Obama wants it to pass, it'll vanish without a ripple.
Scribus likes this. -
@redenchilada perhaps they won't call in SWAT, but they will sieze this domain if it is hosted in the US, or it will block access to this site.
-
@cabal I'd move on. I can live without this site if I have to. Now quit using scare tactics and come up with an actual argument.
-
@redenchilada Well, Idk about that, because technically a bunch of average joes can't hire lobbyists, you know.. "If people were against SOPA, why don't they just hire lobbyists?"
-
Ok, let me try to reword my stance on this argument. I'm against SOPA as much as you guys. I just think the protesting is a dumb idea.
-
@redenchilada I am for protesting, but I'm not going to shut down a social website just to make everyone else protest.
-
@cabal So you want to stop SOPA...by BECOMING SOPA? This isn't Batman you know.
Gherkin ☑️ likes this. -
@cabal You shut the site and everyone will just shrug and go play skyrim or somesuch, and probably never bother coming back because they'll forget about it.
-
@redenchilada You probably spend a lot of time on the internet. How many people don't use the internet compulsively? How many times has it aired on the news? How many? Not many. Most people don't know about this, so this is why people need to raise awareness any way how. How? Lots of people go on wikipedia every day, facebook, etc., they may not know much before the blackout, but once they experience the inconveniences of the internet without their favorite corners, then that's it. they're against it.
-
@cabal I say bring it up to a vote. Tommorrow, have some sort of poll, and ask purpletinker. See what they have to say. If the majority are in support of the blackout, then blackout it is. If the majority of the people are against it, then no blackout. What do you think?
-
@the20percent another possibility is instead of the full 12 hours of blackout like other sites, how about a partial blackout, like 6, or 4 or 3, 2 hours
-
@cabal Doesn't mean I can't find something else to do with my time.
-
@cabal Wait, before you get to far, do you even have permission to shut this down? Because as far as I know, @purpletinker runs the site, and you USED to.
-
Re: SOPA blackouts -- would be fun if Steam got involved. Methinks that would incite a ton of internet users to protest. ;p
-
@cabal where's this website hosted? Canada, US?
-
@cabal Oh. Okay.
-
@cabal I don't object.
-
@purpletinker WHAT
-
@purpletinker There has been some objections, check the timeline.
-
@cabal Disregard objections, do what you want cause a pirate is free.
-
@zarkanorf YOU ARE A PIRATE!
-
@forestrain YOU ARE A PONY.
-
@zarkanorf Neigh. *flaps and tucks wings*
-
@forestrain That's a pegasus, son.
-
@zarkanorf Just because I'm a pegasus doesn't mean I'm not a pony! *snort*
-
@forestrain Didn't mean to offend, bro. :c
-
@zarkanorf No worries! ^.^
