#question When/where is any pony of the mane 6 referred to in the series (cononically) as "mares"? It's my understanding that, even though much of the fandom refers to them as mares, the mane six are merely older fillies.

@pony I don't if it is ever actually said that they are one or the other but based on the fact that Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom are sisters to two of them and they are quite young I would agree with you that they are probably older fillies.

@purplephish20 hmm.. true. But Mare in the moon refers to Luna exclusively and Mare Do Well, besides referring to a secret (not true) identity, is only a title.. @starlightbolt Is that so? Has she said how old/mature they are meant to be? I figured since the show targeted young girls that the mane characters would have been younger also..

@purplephish20 Well that was referring to Nightmare moon, who was definitely a mare, and an unknown character at the time of naming, I don't think it refers directly to the mane 6

@macpony55 exactly.. there's the sister thing too.. of course it's not definitive, but unless Faust really says they're adults, I don't see why we should call them mares consistently.

@pony They act younger than they are. She compared it too a young adult that acts like a teenager I believe. If you notice they have their own homes and jobs.

@pony Well I do believe they are at least close if not mares already, I mean a few of them are already living on their own, but they don't really act completely like adults either, Pinkie Pie is a great example of that.

@starlightbolt I have thought about that fact.. like maybe they're college aged (explaining Twilight's pupil-ship to Celestia) and have moved away from home... but why would Faust make them adult-aged? where's the logic in that? Do you remember your source/where Faust explained this?

@macpony55 Again, that's true, and I /know/ I'm reading way to far into this, but other species do gain independance from their parent(s) earlier than humans. I mean.. ponies take their first steps the day they're born but that doesn't negate the fact that they're neonates still.

@pony It's kinda hard to tell based on stuff like that, didn't a background pony in The Best Night Ever refer to Pinkie Pie as a young something though? Like I remember after one of Pinkie's songs or something somepony addressed her using young, I'll need to check up on that

@macpony55 The shows writers are independent of Hasbro. Hasbro just has a final approval over what goes in.

@starlightbolt I see. So whether rule34 etc. acted that quickly and whether Faust was she aware when she posted their age are both factors. If she used to post on 4chan she must have been aware of Rule34 in general...

@pony Oh no the age post was on deviant art, my mistake. When she posted on /co/ it was already crazy popular, and she did it by request. She wasnt a regular user.
