  1. 13 fasteners on one shield, 6 different ones on another... Just to get to a drain plug. Yes modern cars do bite the big one.

    1. @rancidrob yeah volvos are notorious for miniscule labour hours and intensive crap to do something elsewise simple, especially that t5. An alternator requires the removal of the intake manifold, and pays maybe 2 hours? This was a v50, forget the exact year.

    2. @rancidrob transverse mounts with engines that have more than 4 cylindres in a bank is entirely nonsensical. Hell they manage to cram i4s into cars too small for them.

    3. @rancidrob ohyeah, i realised upon looking at the manifold that they aren't the same in that photo. Almost everything was easier back in those days: yotes, chevys, you name it.

    4. @rancidrob i'm rethinking this industry as well. Too much bs for what you can get paid. Sometimes that is.

    5. @rancidrob grass is always greener on the other side... (Although a big part of me would rather work on airplanes)

    6. @rancidrob i could be seeing airplanes through rose coloured glasses... Closest ive gotten to that dream was consultation on a mikulin engine for a mikoyan3 project way back. They ended up with an allison instead.

    7. @awlderpy You'd expect things to make more sense and become easier as time goes on. But nooo...

      1. @scribus it has and has not arguably. Much mechanical has been replaced by electronic.

    8. @rancidrob But we're allegedly supposed to learn from our collective past and improve.
