  1. You know it's a shame the mix on Liturgy's most recent album is absolutely garbage because lots of the actual songs on the record are some of the most creative approaches to the metal genre I've heard in years

      1. @metaltao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebxIwwhV5MA It has sparked the question of "is this even metal music?" but as far as I'm concerned it is, it's just really highly experimental black metal

            1. @nightmarenarwhal XD
Is metal music the sound or is it the sound and the instruments it uses? What about feel? Does that play a role as well?

              1. @metaltao That's a good question! I guess traditionally metal music has been very guitar driven, so listening to a metal song where guitar isn't playing the lead can be kind of jarring! Feel is important too, but I wouldn't ever say its the genre's bread and butter, I think it's more of just a pattern within some inherent traits of the genre that cause lots of it to sound angry, abrasive, desolate, etc. The thing about feel is it differs even from subgenre to subgenre, like a death metal record will have a totally different feel to a post metal record. I'd say the real points here indicative of discussing what to call Liturgy's music, especially on their most recent record, lie in the subtle stylistic traits of the composition and performance. There a ton of tremolo picked guitars, large atmospheric chordal parts (played on the keys and strings), short bursts of blast beats on the drums, and there is a lot of treble, all of which are loose genre characteristics of black metal.

          1. @metaltao They're kind of a make-or-break for lots of people, I personally don't mind them (and actually kind of like the nonchalant sense of dread and apathy they give off) but it's easy to see how lots of people would prefer screamed vocals to them.
