  1. On my way home I overheard two old guys talking about how according to them there are problems in modern society because parents are no longer allowed to beat their children to discipline them. I'd want to punch them in the face, but unlike them I'm above barbaric physical violence.

            1. @northernnarwhal They may just be repeating it phonetically with no true understanding of its meaning.

              1. @scrybus It's ironic hearing people who actively condone physical abuse have a discussion on the wrongs of society

                1. @northernnarwhal I really do try not to be violently inclined, and for the most part I'm really not; but sometimes, man, idiots just don't understand any other language!

                  1. @scrybus At that point I'd just stop trying to engage with them that way, if it gets to the point where what I'm saying isn't getting across they're not worth the trouble anyway.

    3. @northernnarwhal The arguments of the apologists of such "discipline" have been eviscerated by numerous studies carried out by psychologists. They "counter" the apodictic contentions of the scientific community on this question with crass anti-intellectualism. Physical "discipline" of children in the US is most popular in the Southern states, and these states have the highest rates of teenage pregnancy, juvenile delinquency, etc. Furthermore, dozens of countries have made it illegal for parents to smack their children, and they haven't erupted into "anarchy" as a result (Sweden, Norway, Germany, Finland, Israel, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, etc.).

      1. @m14brony It also creates a parent-child power dynamic structured around fear instead of love and respect, and that can lead to severe traumatic disorders and unhealthy relationship standards
