@tiffany The first 3 aren't bad films, but they're all very distinctly popcorn flicks. Ghost Protocol is too, but it's also just a very well crafted popcorn flick. Action filmmaking is in itself a kind of art.

@tiffany It's not My Kind of Film (which can vary, but in terms of films that came out this year it's probably something more along the lines of Ex Machina) though I definitely engaged with it on a more visceral level. I felt it was the best articulation of all the film craft elements of the franchise that worked as its strengths: smart, stylishly directed and really well shot action scenes with a well paced narrative framework to move the characters from setpiece to setpiece (with the ingenuity of the setpiece design working to facilitate the strength of the action itself).

@tiffany I generally try to evaluate it based on my knowledge and understanding of film craft, though also understanding what it is that the film itself is trying to accomplish is important too. Obviously the writing in the Mission Impossible franchise isn't the kind of writing I generally prioritize in terms of my favourite media, but I also understand that there are different kinds of stories that will be told and not all of them will resonate with me as deeply or personally as other. That being said, I can still evaluate and criticize them based on how effectively I think they articulated their ideas and how well I believe they were put together.
