@vriska Morning, person whom I've had loads of technical issues subscribing to
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 16:04:21 UTC from web-
@nerthos @vriska Well thank you for jumping through hoops! I can guarantee you will like my content.
-
@vriska I expect so! I was unable to subscribe to your quitter account, and then I noticed you had this one, which didn't give me issues.

@vriska @nerthos Hey, someone from RDN! I always thought it was cool that someone stood up a GNU Social/StatusNet instance there.
-
@takeFluffle Puffakenji Well, this instance used to be pretty isolationist, but lately we've been branching out a little bit.

@takepapayaakenji As for staying on the old software, it's just nicer to many than the newer ones. We used StatusNet 0.98 until well into 2013, and then went over to a modified 1.something, but most users don't like the idea of changing to a new interface
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 16:44:59 UTC from web-
@nerthos The only problem I saw with the old 0.98 was that I couldn't get following RDN users to work reliably.
-
@nerthos Some of you guys are pretty cool, and not being able to follow you made me sad.
-
@takegrapeakenji Right now it's on 1.0.1. It's weird because I am subscribed to... five or so? quitter accounts, but lately new subscriptions stopped working. Did you guys change software lately?
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 16:54:42 UTC from web-
@nerthos I'd ask @hannes2peer.
-
@takeappleakenji I'll forward that to our admin.
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 16:57:01 UTC from web-
@nerthos The weird part is I literally just followed @hannes2peer without issue.
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 17:03:32 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark Huh. So apparently it's an issue with certain accounts? It hasn't worked with https://quitter.se/takegrapeakenji or https://quitter.se/vriska
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 17:07:13 UTC from web-
@nerthos I wonder if it's because we have local users with both those names?
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 17:14:15 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark ...You might be right.
Thursday, 18-Feb-16 17:14:49 UTC from web -
@ceruleanspark Likely the error is coming up when our server tries to make a local copy of the federated account.

@vriska good morning to you too
-
@northernnarwhal @vriska Good morning! how are you?
-
@vriska I'm alright, I'm just in music theory class at the moment.
-
@northernnarwhal @vriska music theory, huh? Are you studying music?
-
@vriska Sort of. My program is audio engineering, but most of what I study relates to music in some way. Other classes I have are on things like music production and studio recording, so it's musical in that sense.
-
@northernnarwhal I've just visited your profile. Nice background choice. (I say, as I am listening to Painting With right now). I'm in the music stuff myself, I'm a journalist (blech) and an experimental musician. Music is the best.
-
@vriska Thanks! Animal Collective are one of my favourite groups, and Merriweather Post Pavilion is an effortless modern classic (I haven't listened to Painting With yet, but I've enjoyed the singles off of it a lot and am looking forward to checking it out in its entirety as soon as I can). I myself am also a musician, though I mostly just have a large collection of unfinished demos and undeveloped motifs that I've written. It's neat to hear you're a journalist too, I love the discussion of music as a cultural object.
-
@northernnarwhal Animal Collective is my all time favorite group, they've managed to, with each release, cement themselves as a very special group in that they've created a world in sound all their own, from Here Comes The Indian's anxious primal soundscapes to the sunshine pop of MPP to the wonderful, haunting ambient tunes on Feels. Its all so so good.
-
@vriska Yeah, all their records have a very distinct stylistic identity, and the almost art brut style of their harmony composition heightens the effervescent sense of childhood nostalgia that permeates much of their music. There is no other group really like them, and I treasure their music for changing my perspective on the artform itself throughout the years I've listened to them. Now I really wanna hear all of Painting With!
-
@northernnarwhal Painting With is so, so so good. In my opinion, the best since Feels
-
@vriska I've really liked all the singles so far, so it's nice to see the record holds up in full. It's really hard for me to pick a personal favourite album of theirs, but I have a soft spot for the stripped down folk eclecticism of Sung Tongs. Winter's Love in particular is one of my favourite songs by them and gives me chills every time I hear it, it's such a beautiful song with so much passion behind it.
-
@northernnarwhal @vriska Winter's Love is absolutely great. This is how I would rank their albums. STGSTV>HCTI>Hollinndagain>Feels>Painting With>ST>SJ>MPP>CHZ>CS>Danse Manatee
-
@vriska Oh gosh, I don't even know where I'd begin in ranking their albums. I know that I also hold Spirit in really high regard though, the songwriting on that was and still is incredibly complex and ambitious, and the way its messy recording evoked a sense of "childhood adventure through a magical forest" is something I've never felt from another record before. I need to listen to Here Comes the Indian more often too, I've really enjoyed songs like Native Belle and Infant Dressing Table since I first heard them but haven't revisited the album as a whole in a while.
-
@northernnarwhal Here Comes The Indian and Hollinndagain up through Lablakely Dress are some of my favorite recorded sounds ever. Here Comes The Indian is just, so tense and such a unique atmosphere. And yeah, nothing really touches spirit. It's wonderful.
-
@vriska I remember crying the first time I heard that "my singing voice is gone" sample repeated at the end of Alvin Row. It signalled a loss of innocence, an anxious uncertainty at the finale of an album full of discovery and wonder. Spirit to this day continues to ineffably affect my emotions on a primal level.
-
@vriska This has been a very inspiring conversation, by the way. I think I'll revisit HCTI and Hollinndagain over the weekend :)
