@tiffany Literally he came around this morning broadcasting SCRAP IRON ANY OLD SCRAP IRON in his thick Black Country accent.

@thelastgherkin amazing, I love this

@tiffany Does yours have a weak bugle that almost plays a dixie horn noise but not quite?
Saturday, 21-May-16 09:43:04 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin Yes we have exactly that!!!
Saturday, 21-May-16 09:43:40 UTC from web-
@tiffany Maybe it's the same guy, or a franchise. Gloucester's only about an hour away.

@thelastgherkin I really hope it's a Nurse Joy type situation where there are hundreds of identical scrap iron guys

@tiffany Over here there are scrap in general merchants, never saw one dealing specifically in iron. We do have an old car battery one though.

@nerthos Do they shout "OLD CAR BATTERIES" as they drive down the streets
Saturday, 21-May-16 10:18:19 UTC from web-
@tiffany Yeah. "Bateria vieja señoraaaaa" which translates as "Old car batteries ma'aaaam"
Saturday, 21-May-16 10:19:13 UTC from web-
@nerthos I can't believe this, merchant universalism. What a beautiful thing
Saturday, 21-May-16 10:22:55 UTC from web-
@tiffany Long ago we used to have the "botellero" which was exactly the same thing, but yelled it's name as it passed, and dealt in glass bottles when everything was made of glass. They seem to be gone after many decades though.

@nerthos And so the recycling cycle begins anew, bless

@tiffany I guess it's a decent job when you don't have the money to set up a shop with all the taxes, rent, and other costs it has, but you have a truck and somewhere to sell. My grandfather used to make a few extra bucks picking up the old newspapers from his friends' houses as he rode his bike around town, and then selling them to plant stores as they use it to wrap flowerpots so they don't break or fill everything with mud when moved. You can do that with basically anything that can be easily recycled if you have the time and inclination.

@nerthos well this guy in particular has been doing this every summer for as long as I can remember, so I can only assume and hope he has a great career going for him
Saturday, 21-May-16 10:30:53 UTC from web-
@tiffany Maybe he has a seasonal job the rest of the year, but is free on the summers?
Saturday, 21-May-16 10:32:03 UTC from web-
@nerthos Perhaps. Maybe he's a teacher, bestowing his ways unto the youth
Saturday, 21-May-16 10:34:07 UTC from web-
@tiffany You should get some scrap iron and ask him as you turn it over.
Saturday, 21-May-16 10:34:39 UTC from web-
@nerthos I will feel like I'm missing out if I don't do that at least once in my life tbh

@nerthos @tiffany He was retired by then though and didn't do it as a job, I should clarify. He'd visit everyone anyway so making a buck out of it was practical.
