My phone won't show the USB drive mode option whatever-it's-called when I plug it into my laptop now. Help? :(
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 19:57:48 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Did you just upgrade to Ice Cream Sandvich?
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 19:58:17 UTC from web-
@bitshift I haven't done anything to my phone in ages.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 19:58:42 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Huh, okay. I thought it might be that you've got one of those builds where the manufacturer decided to switch of USB Mass Storage support in ICS (because there's MTP as a replacement/alternative in ICS and up - except MTP is awful).
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:00:30 UTC from web-
@bitshift ...My phone's spitting out something about MTP now. I didn't even tell it to update anything! D:<
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:05:04 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Oh dear. Hm... check the USB sub-menu of network settings? (I know that's where Samsung unintuitively moved the mass storage option to on the EU/International firmware, so that would be the first place to check.)
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:07:40 UTC from web-
@bitshift Found it, but. When the USB cable's unplugged, it tells me to plug it in. When it's plugged in, it tells me to unplug it!
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:10:47 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Unplug, press option, plug. Unintuitive as all get-out, but it technically works. This is one of the major reasons I jumped ship to Cyanogenmod as soon as they got the restored stock UMS option functional.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:13:18 UTC from web-
@bitshift It's still not working! D:
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:14:10 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Eep. I need to go locate my sister's phone (the only stock Samsung device readily available to me), then, so I can confirm I'm not getting the order of the steps wrong.

@redenchilada I have no idea if there even is CM9 support for your carrier's SGS2 variant, though.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:14:16 UTC from web-
@bitshift Cyanogenmod? Wat es?
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:15:04 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Custom aftermarket firmware that generally stays much closer to vanilla Android (except with more features, mostly useful ones).

@redenchilada However, the only S2 variants officially supported are the international, Bell, and Telcel variants (because the rest have broader hardware differences), so you may well be out of luck.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:18:03 UTC from web-
@bitshift Bah. I'm on Sprint. D:<
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:19:00 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Interestingly, all the compatibility comparisons I can find show that the Sprint variant (at least I think the Epic 4G Touch is theirs) has absolutely perfect support except in two minor areas - the CDMA and WiMax radio modules. :\
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:24:33 UTC from web-
@bitshift That's theirs. What are those used for?
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:25:37 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Oh, just connecting to Sprint's network. Like I said, pretty minor losses. :P
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:26:35 UTC from web-
@bitshift No, it's kind of important that I can get phone calls on this thing. >:(

@redenchilada Unfortunately, that's pretty much the worst bit to be lacking, because there is no realistic option for getting functional radio modules without proper firmware/drivers, and only Samsung have enough knowledge of the hardware to produce such firmware/drivers - so even if you do go Cyanogenmod (due to the flaws in Samsung's build), you'll still have to wait until Samsung have actually done an ICS release (because then the firmware from that can _probably_ be integrated into the CM build).
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:29:36 UTC from web-
@bitshift Buh. It's saying CM7 works with devices that haven't gotten ICS yet. Would that be worth trying?
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:36:21 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Might be, but I have a horrible feeling that I read some time ago that even minimal support for the non-international variants is only in CM9 (and up, except 10 is not a thing quite yet).
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:38:35 UTC from web-
@bitshift I hate having this phone. ;~;
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:39:23 UTC from web-
@redenchilada at least your phone is better than mine
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:40:00 UTC from web -
@redenchilada that feel
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:44:45 UTC from web -
@redenchilada I did find an extremely experimental-looking unofficial CM7 build for the E4GT. But the missing features include support for "4G, GPS, Bluetooth, vibration hardware, microSD slot, 911 calls from the lockscreen", so I would strongly recommend against it for a phone you actually need to use day to day. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389975)
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:46:00 UTC from web-
@bitshift Oh wow, that looks so terrible. Then again, my _stock_ firmware can't use Wifi for some odd reason.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:47:15 UTC from web-
@redenchilada It wouldn't be so bad if the problems didn't include inability to make emergency calls without unlocking the phone first. That... seems like a kind of important thing to not be missing.

@redenchilada Is your laptop on? Connection connecting? Uh....
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 19:59:51 UTC from web-
@scribus I'm on my laptop, and it's definitely connecting because it says "Charging (USB)".

@redenchilada Well, heck. =/

@mrconventrix Iphoens are dumb, my mom has one and I can't use it at all.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:41:20 UTC from web -
@thatonepony This thing barely works half the time. It never rings and yet I have a ton of missed calls.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:41:57 UTC from web -
@mrconventrix I figured out my Android without a guide, so why should I look up how to use an iphoen? Besides, I can't develop for an iphoen.

@mrconventrix So how are you?
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:45:10 UTC from web-
@theapplebucker hello :) I'm pretty new to this website and would need some friends and then I saw you :) I would have to say that Applejack is the best pony and I think you agree ;) It would be awesome to get a new friend and I think you might be a great brony in the same age as me :) and btw what's your favourite episode?

@mrconventrix Why would I switch off a phone that I've gotten used to anyway. It's a bit glitchy, yeah, but I get so much more out of it than I ever could with an iphoen.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:48:09 UTC from web -
@mrconventrix I don't know the language the iphoen uses. I know the language Android uses well enough to have written a (stupid throwaway) app for it.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:51:19 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Also, you can only develop iPhone applications on OS X - with the official dev tools, anyway; I think some of the "write once, build for all mobile platforms" systems can build iPhone apps on other OSes, but they have their own problems.
Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 20:53:53 UTC from web-
@bitshift I know one of the things I used to have for making games had a "build to iPhone" option that required a Mac, even though the program itself was Windows-only. *rolls eyes*

@redenchilada must be talking about a certain Clickteam Product..
