@omni ^_^ do you know why Ubuntu might give me trouble when clicking "Run" for an executable text file instead of "Run in Terminal"? Tor gives me an error after starting when i's not run in the terminal. xP
-
@pony Could you define what you mean with "an executable text file"? If it's .sh (for example) then it needs to be run in a terminal emulator, because it's a "shell script", as we call it. I need to have a bit more info about what kind of file we're dealing with, though (and I have to go in 2 minutes and probably won't be back soon then).
-
@omni yes it's a .sh file used to launch Tor
-
@omni No hurry for an answer. I appreciate your taking the time to help whether or not there's an answer. Thanks!
-
@pony Well, yeah, that's exactly it. Sh stands for "shell script" which executes commands in a terminal. I always thought Ubuntu was configured well enough to always open that in a terminal though, but seems I'm wrong. At any rate, that's the issue :P ("Real" executables don't have an extension under Linux, by the way). I would expect you to be able to configure what program to open .sh files with in a way, but I haven't used Unity in... forever so I can't recall that from the top of my head.

@omni ah ok.. hmm.. I rebooted and now it actually is running fine. I don't have to click "Run in Terminal", just "Run" Thanks for the explanation though. !themoreyouknow

@omni @toksyuryel when you're not busy maybe I could pick somepony's brain about how to get Transmission to download my torrent over Tor or some other way that will get around my university filters..
-
@pony Ubuntu is starting to look more and more like Windows. Something broken? Reboot.
Toksyuryel likes this. -
@pony I know nothing of Transmission nor how to adequately make use of Tor.
-
@pony I'm not sure how to get that to work but Vuze seems to have built-in Tor support. At any rate, Tor advices against using Bittorrent because it slows down the network (from what I've read) so, unless you're planning to be a jerk, you may want to at least be a traffic relay to make up for your torrenting :P
