There is 600 apples in a barrel. Applejack gets 10 more than Pinkie. Rainbowdash gets 20 less than Pinkie. How many apples do they all get?
-
@derpyshy Either my brain is playing up or that's not actually workable?

@derpyshy But if it was, Rainbow would get 183 and a third, Pinkie would get 203 and a third, and AJ would get 213 and a third.

@thelastgherkin If you use algebra, I *think* it's possible :/ I have no idea... my maths-teacher said "Bim Babbety Poo!" And she had the answers :s

@derpyshy I worked it out like this: Rainbow has the lowest amount, so let's give her zero. Pinkie has twenty more than that, so twenty. AJ has ten more than Pinkie, so thirty. RD 0, PP 20, AJ 30. That means we have 550 apples left in the barrel. Divide that by three and you get 183 and a third, and then you give that to each pony.

@thelastgherkin But I want apples too :c

@thelastgherkin As far as I can tell, as long as the requirement isn't to divide the remainder equally (and certainly it's not mentioned in @derpyshy's wording), any split is valid, as long as it doesn't disrupt the difference between the three with known relative amounts.

@bitshift Yeah but dawg, that's the only way to split it using all the apples.

@thelastgherkin Hell, the way it's worded, you could give 20 to Pinkie, 30 to AJ, and the remaining 550 all to Twilight, and still be within the limits you were set.

@bitshift That would make it a trick question. I remember something like that to do with fire engines and response times and should they send out less fire engines or whatever and the answer was "No you fool, send out all the fire engines, people could be dying, c'mon".

@thelastgherkin It's not so much a trick question as one with no single right answer. (Again, as worded. With more detail, a single correct answer might well emerge.)
