    1. @hakupony Hello, Hakupony #

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 15:47:32 UTC from web
      1. @omni ^_^ I like hugs. So how are you, omniscient one?

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 15:48:43 UTC from web
        1. @hakupony Better than yesterday. I slept little, though, so I have a bit of a headache, but it could be worse. Also, I'm not that smart :(

          1. @omni I'm just in a lazy mood. Also - I know you are not that smart but smart you are.

            1. @hakupony I see, I'm downloading music again, I love music :P. I need to find a solution to my storage issue, though, I don't want to go back to MP3 files but playing all my music from our external "backup" drive doesn't seem that good of an idea...

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 15:57:24 UTC from web
              1. @omni IKR?! I hate not having HQ music, but also having too little storage space, I'll probably just get a terrabite harddrive...

                1. @gameboy152 Oh, cool, another non-MP3 user. Which file format do you prefer, if I may ask?

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 15:59:32 UTC from web
                  1. @omni (Wait... didn't I hear him talk about iTunes Store lately?)

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 15:59:58 UTC from web
                    1. @omni You might have heard me? I am technically a non-Mp3 user, in that I encode music that deserves it losslessly.

                              1. @shadowdash454 Which phone and which version of Android are we talking about? Google says Android supports FLAC, but this may be up to the phone and Android version at times, I suppose.

                                  1. @shadowdash454 How strange, quick research says it supports .OGG. What's going wrong when you're trying to play it, if I may ask?

                    1. @gameboy152 Normally what i get straight from disc. I do use my iphone for most music, it sucks cause of compression

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:01:07 UTC from web
                    2. @gameboy152 Seeing how you use iTunes, I will assume you're not using Linux, so I can't really help you with all this "installing codecs" stuff (Windows has a codec pack online, Mac OS X, no clue) but the hardest step is finding high-quality files. Bandcamp allows you to download stuff in FLAC or ALAC, which are lossless high-quality formats (FLAC does not work in iTunes, ALAC does). I download and rip my music as FLAC, but both FLAC and ALAC (and WAV) don't use any lossy compression so you won't lose any quality :P

                      1. @omni My cousin is an editor for a radio program, he was saying he used .WAV for audio files. Not sure how to use music on a PC without freaking Itunes, or how to listen to non Itunes music on my IPhone without jailbreaking it...

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:05:19 UTC from web
                        1. @gameboy152 How to listen to non-iTunes music: Go to iTunes, Click File, then click Add file to library. Then pick the file you want and it'll be in your library.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:07:27 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                        2. @gameboy152 There are enough free music players that allow you to listen to music, especially for my platform (we have several called "Yet Another Music Player") and syncing with your iPhone should be possible, though sometimes a bit harder. I wonder what Operating System you are using, though. Windows? Mac OS X? (Also, personally, I won't let iTunes ever touch my music collection again after the mess it made once)

                                  1. @redenchilada Either you picked a too intense distro, or it's worse than a pentium 4 with sub 1g ram.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:17:55 UTC from web
                                    1. @gameboy152 Most game design schools teach you how to use DirectX and so, which doesn't run under Linux, so that's quite a waste of energy if you really want to do that (unless the Linux market will grow exponentially enough to make those school realize that OpenGL is actually pretty damn awesome).

                                        1. @gameboy152 Ubuntu can be installed without modifying your system at all, so that should be easy enough to try anyway :P

                                          1. @omni What is that? Like i said, sad excuse for a nerd here

                                            1. @gameboy152 Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution for the desktop.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:26:04 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                                            2. @gameboy152 You can download it for free and burn on a DVD. It really is worth trying - and if it is just to have a comletly bootable operating system for the case when yours doesn't boot any more.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:27:57 UTC from web
                                              1. @hakupony Okay, I just don't know how to boot another OS, do I just start the computer with the disk in if i got it?

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:29:13 UTC from web
                                                1. @gameboy152 You'll probably have to change the boot priority from your BIOS.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:30:23 UTC from web
                                                2. @gameboy152 Usually, your computer is set so it does try to boot from that drive first. if that is the case, it is enough to just turn the computer on with the DVD in it. Otherwise, you would have to change a setting in the BIOS. But never mind, it isn't as hard as it sounds :3

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:31:32 UTC from web
                                                  1. @hakupony Ok, I'll try that later

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:33:12 UTC from web
                                                    1. @gameboy152 So what else does make you nerdy?

                                                      1. @hakupony I am a die hard halo fan, I study warp physics and the concept of slipspace travel. Along with several other things

                                                          1. @hakupony It's a concept from halo, a kind of hyperspace, where the dimension is smaller and you can travel much faster

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:37:25 UTC from web

                            1. @hakupony I also used to use an iPod Touch, and I've used Windows 98SE through 7 for a VERY long time... After looking around for other possibilities, that didn't last long anymore though :P

              2. @omni Get a NAS with a media server and stream it?

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 15:59:37 UTC from web
                1. @eaglehooves But that takes money. Also, streaming to my PC and then streaming it from my PC using MPD? That doesn't sound like a good idea (also, won't it strain my network to constantly download FLAC files from the NAS? Are NAS systems even strong enough to render FLAC without lagging?)

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:01:31 UTC from web
                  1. @omni Depends on the network. I assumed you were listening on the PC if you were using FLAC, so I'm not sure about how you're bouncing it around. As for speed and network strain, I have my computer and my NAS both plugged into a gigabit router. Transfer speeds are usually pretty good, but I've never actually enabled the media sharing side of mine.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:06:24 UTC from web
                    1. @eaglehooves I have my music on my PC as FLAC, and let MPD play the FLAC stream locally, but also stream a 192kbps OGG stream which I can listen to over the Internet (our upload speed is relatively bad, so it's barely possible to use higher quality). However, with a NAS being on our local connection, it'll probably be a completely different story.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:08:48 UTC from web
                      1. @omni If you're streaming it already, the NAS probably isn't a good idea. You're probably straining your network enough.

              3. @omni What do oyu have against MP3?

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 15:59:48 UTC from web
                1. @hakupony It uses lossy compression, so you lose parts of the music. For some songs it's unnoticeable, but for some songs you can really hear (or, in the case of Merzbow, feel) the difference.

Tuesday, 11-Sep-12 16:04:33 UTC from web
                  1. @omni Yeah, I was listening to one of my fav songs on disc in my mom's car. awesome bass. then i stream it from my phone. it wasn't even close, it got rid of ALL THE BASS!
