My brother has had a Kindle Fire all of two days before DRM messed up his experience. DRM: Bad for everyone.
Tuesday, 06-Nov-12 18:50:17 UTC from web- Scribus, derps and RDN's Lucifer and 2 others like this.
- sasha, Omni, Bit Shift and derps repeated this.
-
@ceruleanspark It's actually quite funny because DRM is keeping a lot of people from purchasing things, therefore doing the exact opposite of what companies want DRM to do :P
-
@omni Well, this way, companies will learn and abandon the concept someday.
-
@omni He bought two perfectly legit books, but because they were encrypted /the wrong way/, he couldn't put them on his device. That's BS of the highest order. I have set things to rights and told him to avoid that seller in future.
-
@omni The trouble is, it's not preventing enough purchases yet to act as a wake-up call.
-
@ceruleanspark That reminds me of old CDs in store. "Due to copy-protection, this CD may not run correctly in some audio players". I still haven't found out why people accept that kind of BS, especially if it's written on the package so clearly.
-
@omni What threw my brother is that the book store in question sold him the kindle in the first place. It is not unreasonable to expect their ebooks to be compatible with it.
-
@ceruleanspark Yeah, that is a pretty reasonable expectation. I still buy my books on paper, especially because I only really read manga and manga misses something when it's digitally. Also, I can share my book AND NOBODY CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT MUAHAHAHA BUCK THE POLICE
-
@omni I buy books either way. Whichever is convenient. 1000 page fantasy tome to read on my lunchbreak? Kindle. Light reading around the house? Paper.
-
@ceruleanspark Hmm... Why can't I just get a digital .pdf or this other ebook format with my book purchase? Like, a link on the receipt to download it? That would be awesome...
-
@omni In England, it is because ebooks are taxed differently to real books. (you pay VAT on ebooks)
-
@ceruleanspark Oh, I see. Also, that's kinda strange. But oh well.
-
@ceruleanspark How do they figure VAT? I've spent a lot of time trying to figure it out myself and all it does is give me a headache.
-
@ceruleanspark I first tought you were talking about bonfires and I couldn't find any sense on that phrase.
