@omni My parents' computer is refusing to run Windows so I need to install Linux. What distro do you reccomend for 40-something parents who are of the "I like IE more than Firefox" variety?

@fortecadenza I'm not Omni, but I would suggest perhaps Xubuntu. Xfce is pretty similar to Windows' interface if you set it up right, and Ubuntu is meant to be one of the "newbie friendly"-est distros. #eavesdropping :P

@scribus I've never used Xfce, but I'll check it out.

@fortecadenza Very simple, quite point-and-click, no silly tricks. Openbox has been growing on me, but Xfce is still up there on my list. KDE would probably dominate, but it always has crappy little derp-outs that don't render it unusable, just really irritating. =/ But anyway, Xfce is nice, yeah. :P

@fortecadenza Okay, so we obviously need something which looks like Windows. That leaves us with KDE (which looks like Vista but has way more settings), LXDE (which looks like Windows 2000) or possibly Cinnamon. For KDE I would recommend the KDE edition of Linux Mint, for LXDE I would recommend Lubuntu and for Cinnamon I would recommend the standard Linux Mint with Cinnamon. I would recommend looking KDE, LXDE and Cinnamon up on Wikipedia and decide which you think is best, you can probably decide that a tad bit better than me. And even if you choose wrong, you can always install another Desktop Environment so it's not a big problem if you choose wrong at first.

@omni I'm liking the look of Lubuntu right now, it seems like something my parents would actually be able to use.

@fortecadenza Well, at very least it should be quick. LXDE is one of the most lightweight desktop environments we have. I hope your parents will be able to use it.
