Nostalgia ruins gamers...
Tuesday, 09-Apr-13 03:22:01 UTC from web-
@bowandlyre How so?
-
@bowandlyre I understand what you're saying, but I would say advancements in technology ruins gamers. There are times when I decide to go back and play one of my classic GameCube games, but I just can't deal with it compared to modern gaming.
-
@scribus Because it just makes the blind and stupid sometimes (not all the times) Let's say some reviewer grew up with Ocarina of time but then he plays Windwaker. He says he liked everything about windwaker more but he says OOT is better because it's nostalgic to him.
-
@bowandlyre Uh huh...
-
@starlynx I go back and play games from my childhood because of nostalgia. but the thing is I don't let nostalgia cloud my judgement about games. I love every game in the mario series, I grew up with Super mario 64 and recently I played mario Galaxy 2. I honestly think Mario Galaxy 2 is the better game in my opinion because i had much more fun with it. But other gamers say "I grew up with SM64 so it's better"
-
@scribus It makes sense in my head. Trust me everything does.
-
@bowandlyre It doesn't not make sense to me, it just never seemed that common a thing in my experience.
-
@scribus Yeah, that's right - "doesn't not." #dealwithit
-
@scribus Lucky you man.
-
@bowandlyre I feel the same about a lot of classic games. I've enjoyed Need for Speed:Most Wanted more than the original, which is still impossible in my mind.
-
@starlynx I like Xenoblade Chronicles a game i played 1 year ago more than Paper Mario TTYD A game I've played all my life and have so many memories.
-
@bowandlyre I've seen old-school gamers say they preferred the games of their youths because the newer ones were too complicated for them, or just rehashes of things they've seen several times by now, stuff like that. Me, I prefer my old games because I just don't get into a lot of what's big now. Never been a big FPS guy, most newer RPGs are a bit too action-y for me (also I got spoiled by D&D), and there really haven't been adventure games in the grand old tradition since the grand old tradition. But I don't really get on about how new games are "bad," just that they don't fit my tastes. Also, I don't have nearly as much time as I did, so . . . yeah.
-
@bowandlyre I definitely understand that. One thing that saddens me is that I really like all these great games that have come out over the past two years, like Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Revelations and 3, Dark Souls, etc, but I don't wanna play them non stop anymore. Not even the intense multiplayer that I love in Halo. I don't get amped and get this idea that I wanna play it for more than 2 hours.
-
@starlynx Every game gets boring after some time.
-
@bowandlyre Yeah, but I used to play Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for 6 hours plus. I used to beat Tony Hawk's Underground on a daily basis. I used to play Halo 3 to the point of falling asleep mid match on The Pit.
-
@scribus I can respect that. I can't respect people saying old games are better than new one because THEY grew up with the old ones.
-
@starlynx Halo 3 damn that's some good memories...
-
@bowandlyre I was obsessed. Its the only game I ever played competitively and actually made some money. I spent hours practicing, and when I wasn't practicing, it was custom games with friends.
-
@bowandlyre Yeah, that drives me a bit nuts about any medium. :p "Tolkein is the one true fantasy, disregard this 'urban' nonsense!" :p
-
@starlynx Wow if I could make money by survivong high rounds in COD zombies i'd be a millionare!
-
@scribus "Paper mario sticker star sucks because I grew up with Thousand year door" wat
-
@bowandlyre Yeah, CoD Zombies is a great competitive game mode. Host a local tournament or something. Get noticed and then you might have a chance to compete on a national level.
-
@bowandlyre "3.X D&D sucks because they finally got rid of that unnecessarily convoluted THAC0 nonsense!"
-
@starlynx I so wish. I need to practice more though I only make it to rounds 40 because i get bored after a while XD
-
@scribus THAC0 is what separates true gamers from causals!
-
@nerthos Yeah, some have argued that it's an IQ test that one needs to pass in order to game. :p
-
@bowandlyre That makes sense. I get bored of training after 25, but it's just so time consuming.
Artorias likes this. -
@starlynx Fancy graphics destroyed true immersion for me. A game hasn't scared me since the 2.5D era.
-
@starlynx Dude THANK YOU I hate training past round 25+ In Die rise i get bored of shooting once and running in circles, In ascension same, in Kino Same, in Der riese ... We don't talk about that one...
-
@scribus It also lets me win modfights.
-
@bowandlyre I barely play solo anymore. I like 4-man on either Kino, Der Riese or Call of the Dead. Tranzit and Die Rise are cool maps, but I'm not a fan of the extra stuff.
-
@nerthos I'm the same. I notice the graphics of a game for the first 15 minutes, then it doesn't bother me. Try Dead Space though if you wanna be scared.
-
@starlynx I like 4 player co op because it keeps things interesting specially if one of them really sucks.
-
@bowandlyre Yeah, and if it's good friends that your with, even the stuff that batcavees you off a lot is lessened and while your screaming you're laughing.
-
@bowandlyre Yeah, and if it's good friends that your with, even the stuff that dolees you off a lot is lessened and while your screaming you're laughing.
-
@starlynx I played Dead Space. It didn't feel scary at all, just slow. The gameplay of Dead Space is the opposite to fluenty.
-
@nerthos A lot of people seem to like it. Far Cry 3 can be as scary as mangoes. But for the most part you're the hunter, not really worrying about being in danger.
-
@starlynx It's always a party when I play zombies with my friends.
-
@starlynx I haven't felt in "danger" in a game for a while. Games just don't have the difficulty they used to anymore, wether because of being easier or because of me being better at them. Dead Space's difficulty was based solely on crappy controls and low character agility that effectively bottlenecked my skill (that doesn't mean I didn't murder aliens horribly, doing it just sucked) Far Cry I haven't played yet.
-
@nerthos They'll be times, especially at night, in Far Cry 3, where you will be so nervous and try and anticipate mangoes, but right as you go to strike or sneak past, you get bit my a komodo dragon, and you will lose it. Scary as can be. I've heard that dying as a top level in Diablo 3 on Hardcore, which means you get one life, can cause a lot of fear and rage.
-
@starlynx I'll have to try it, but I doubt it'll be that scary. So far the only thing that gets me kind of scared are real life danger situations. I used to do some pretty risky stuff just for the feeling of it.
-
@nerthos Dead Space is not a bad game, but not scary at all.
-
@nerthos I've never been one to "shoot to thrill", mostly because I get thrilled really easily. I get hyped for the most pointless things.
-
@starlynx That's one of the downsides of my psyche. It's extremely efficient and allows me to keep in control in almost any situation, but it's hard to feel thrill.
-
@wafers It needs a more agile character.
-
@nerthos I don't get scared in dangerous situations, but get really pumped with adrenaline. Everything seems so much faster when jacked up on adrenaline.
-
@nerthos I rather have a cool head though like you.
-
@nerthos DS3 implemented a roll-dodge feature but it's pretty dumb. You have full invincibility and it lasts like 10 frames.
-
@wafers The only times when I'm really pumped with adrenaline are when fighting or when hunting.
-
@wafers IT's not about taking damage, it's about the game being slow.
-
@starlynx It's useful but not really fun.
-
@nerthos Sometimes I can actually just think of something really dire and still get an adrenaline rush. I often go sprinting like a mad man and see how far I can go before feeling fatigued.
-
@nerthos Well, fast paced horror shooters really don't work out too well. That defeats the purpose of the horror aspect.
-
@wafers I can force small adrenaline rushes but it's not the same.
-
@wafers That's why I don't play "horror" games. They're not scary, they're just restrictive.
-
@nerthos I get so immersed into every game I play that games like Amnesia actually creep me out because I legitimately feel like i'm there.
-
@wafers Amnesia legitimately failed to make me feel immersed because of the complete lack of freedom. I could see potential weapons everywhere but the game didn't let me use them.
-
@nerthos I agree but i'm still able to immerse myself in that world extremely easily. As for the weapons, apparently the monsters are impervious to physical damage, but that's just an excuse for keeping weapons out.
-
@nerthos May I speak with you for a moment?
-
@nerthos I love the idea of not having any weapons. That's what made the game actually scary for me. Not having any means of defense besides running and hiding just seems like good horror to me. Also the atmosphere and sound were dang phenomenal.
-
@wafers I'm pretty sure covering them in acid would work marvels. But even if they're indestructible, hitting them with an iron bar and tying them to a cell would be useful at least.
-
@tenebarius Sure
-
@wafers They just force me to behave in a way I consider stupid and ineffective.
-
@nerthos Perhaps they'll improve the mechanics in the next game, but I think the point of restriction was this: A simple knife, or screw, or even a chair or saw wouldn't really do much to stop the creatures after you.
-
@nerthos Which is why you just forget who you are and put yourself into the shoes of a wimpy brittish gentleman.
-
@tenebarius It doesn't matter if they don't do any damage. Not allowing me to perform basic actions ruins it.
-
@tenebarius No, Amnesia is designed specifically to prevent any real means of self-defense. Penumbra had weapons but that killed the horror in the game.
-
@wafers I'm supposed to make the guy survive. I do what is best for survival, and some times that means throwing acid at walking corpses.
-
@nerthos But that would kill the whole purpose of the game, which is to evoke the feeling of helplessness and panic in events you have no control over.
-
@wafers Make the weapons fail to do damage. It's as simple as that. I can't get if the only possible course of action is running. If the only course that leads to success is running, and all the other options lead to you getting killed, it's a completely different and more realistic thing.
-
@nerthos I would actually love to have "weapons" that do no damage, but i'm fine with the way the game is now.
-
@nerthos I have no idea why, but I sent you a rather extensive message.
-
@wafers Black Plague didn't. Having weapons didn't kill the horror for me. D:
-
@tenebarius Yeah, I'm writing my reply.
-
@tenebarius Black Plague was just kinda bad in general. Everything seemed more silly than scary. Overture was fantastic but the enemies sucked.
-
@wafers I dunno. Black Plague threw me in pretty well. It went a bit over the top, I'll give you that.
-
@tenebarius At least it's better than Requiem...
-
@wafers Requiem had hardly any story, and wasn't scary, but its puzzles were dang tricky!!
-
@tenebarius I just can't wait for A Machine For Pigs.
-
@wafers Nor can I. It looks amazing! It's the kind of horror I dreamed about as a kid...
-
@tenebarius I am also dreading it too beacuse it's being developed by a different company and being published by Frictional. I hope the new guys do the game justice.
-
@tenebarius Replied with two massive walls of text. (massive by this place's standards anyway)
