SO ANYWAY the realisation that Americans not only drive on the other side of the road BUT ALSO have Drive-Thrus ANTI-CLOCKWISE has just completely BLOWN MY MIND

@thelastgherkin And we can turn right on a red light.

@starshine On a RED light? :O
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:42:03 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin Well, you guys can turn left on red, yeah?
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:43:23 UTC from web-
@starshine ...No? Red means stop.
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:45:11 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin Huh. There goes my Theory of Everything.
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:46:40 UTC from web-
@starshine Wait, you can go on a RED light? Really? That's crazy!

@thelastgherkin http://serveroceanus.net/wat Nothing much, just chatting on steam and here, you?
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:49:42 UTC from web -
@thelastgherkin Yes... well, as long as there's no vehicles coming, and no pedestrians, and there's no sign prohibiting it. I think if not for the right-on-red, traffic would get all jammed up in some places. You do have a lot more yield signs and traffic circles in the UK though, which would probably help move things along similarly.

@starshine Huh. I did not know that. Makes sense though! (Also I had to Google to see that you meant Give Way signs and roundabouts.)
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:56:50 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin I think I can count on one hand the number of yield signs I know of within 20 minutes of my house, and the closest traffic circle I'm aware of is about an hour away. It's heavily signed and marked, and people still manage to get confused by it.

@starshine WAIT. On American roundabouts, the traffic ENTERING the roundabout has right of way? WHAT KIND OF UPSIDE-DOWNE TOWNE COUNTRY IS THIS
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 21:00:16 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin America has roundabouts?
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 21:21:59 UTC from web-
@scribus Wikipikipeddia says so, so it must be true!
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 21:23:43 UTC from web-
@thelastgherkin Come to think of it, I think I've seen . . . one.
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 21:24:06 UTC from web-
@scribus See! Wikipedia knows the truth.

@starshine Don't forget that this also depends upon the state you're in: most allow it unless specifically marked, but some prohibit it unless specifically marked as being all right. Just like how screwy U-turn laws are.
-
@astra Oh yeah, there's that too. Fortunately I'm nowhere near one of those states that prohibits it by default.

@rotation Do NASCAR racers have McDonalds in the pit stops
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:49:10 UTC from web -
@rotation Maybe. What are they?
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 20:58:58 UTC from web -
@rotation Sounds like the sort of thing that you might find in California. The only thing that I can think of is a turning lane, and I'm fairly sure that's not what you're referring to.
Wednesday, 17-Aug-11 21:13:31 UTC from web -
@rotation They're usually not separate, just marked with a solid line.
