@scriba I like the way the Swiss do things with their mandatory armament and training of sane, able bodied people (this is also coupled with a lack of a belligerent foreign policy that would get those people killed for the benefit of a tiny rich minority).

@scriba Fortunately, I was already suspicious of them when I started getting into guns. Events continue to show that I made the right decision in avoiding them. It would probably be much harder for politicians to push anti-gun legislation without the NRA making us look bad.

@metaltao It is an excellent preservative, and I have come to like the scent of it. Of course, as I said, it is a laborious process to remove it (for instance, back in 2007, I must have spent a couple of hours removing the cosmoline from a Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS).

Hm. After looking around, it looks like the original Cosmoline is no longer manufactured. Although there are replacements like Rust Veto:

@metaltao It is a thick, waxy grease that can be used to cover metallic parts for long term storage to prevent rust (it won't eventually dry out like oil).

@metaltao One can "archive" guns with cosmoline. I have purchased military surplus rifles that were successfully protected from rust for decades with it. Granted, removing it when you want to take the gun out of long-term storage is a laborious process.
