@iamderpy I'd buy one! I don't happen to have any pony merch, so I might as well. !ottawabronies I randomly discovered 2 bronies in my programming class! Who'd a thunk it?
Wednesday, 16-Nov-11 13:03:38 UTC from web-
@iamderpy I'm interested for sure. :) Also looking forward to seeing the !ottawabronies at N2U! :D @shipomaster Lucky! I haven't met any fellow bronies outside of all y'all. :)

Hey bronies! Who likes patches? A local airsofting brony and I are considering putting patches like these into production; https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/301630_1990950627202_1646460115_1493662_1530866744_n.jpg ... once we've gauged interest, we'll take pre-orders, then get them made. Cost is going to be ~10-12$ (short-run crests/patches aren't cheap, unfortunately.) We need minimum 10 interested to proceed. ( !ottawabronies )

!ottawabronies you drive a hard bargain. I'd be willing to try out some pony patches.

Semi-crazy question from an outright crazy brony; Any of you fine people know how to work with 3d modeling software (3dsmax/Maya/Blender)? Myself and iamderpy may have an idea that would be fun for all of us in the !ottawabronies group.
Monday, 07-Nov-11 03:12:31 UTC from web-
@syntaxcapt !ottawabronies I have some rudimentary experience with 3DS Max, its not much, but as long as it wasn't something too complex I might be able to help :)

!ottawabronies @mergemm I thought it had a good, neutral stance, which is rare for articles featuring bronies. Usually they are swayed too far by either side. As for the haters in the comments, well, to me the hate is often quite hilarious. Most haters seem to have no idea what they are talking about; I often listen to the critics because I like to have an understanding of both sides, despite my own opinion. Yet, with MLP haters, I have yet to hear a legitimate reason for disliking it so much. Oh well.

@cakewalk !ottawabronies Welp, haters gonna hate. But really what were we expecting from something like this?
Saturday, 05-Nov-11 15:02:29 UTC from web -
@mergemm The story I felt, was well done with no negative labels slapped on along side the title "bronies". I do find, however, the comments section of this article seems to be going overboard. !ottawabronies
Saturday, 05-Nov-11 01:57:55 UTC from web-
@syntaxcapt The comments section of any article is a wretched hive of Parasprites and Manticores. On any newspaper site. There are people paid big bucks to say or do stupid things on all of them. Plus, 4chan trolls.
-
!ottawabronies @mergemm I agree with @syntaxcapt , the article was well written and seemed to be genuinely researched (kinda funny to see Rainbow Dash on the cover of the WSJ), though the comments section does seem to be rather full of hate at points...
-
@mergemm !ottawabronies I always tend to bristle a little at the 'tell their own stories'. Fanfic still gets a sidelong glance from a lot of quarters, but you can't tell me after reading stuff like Jetfire's "It's A Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door" that it's a silly thing to be doing with one's fandom.

Story about bronies on the front page of the Wall Street Journal today http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203707504577012141105109140.html What do you guys think? !ottawabronies

!Ottawabronies Happy belated Nightmare Night from me as well! I was sporting Pinkie Pie's gala dress (home-made) this year. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone got it. Hope you all had a good night!
Wednesday, 02-Nov-11 01:01:35 UTC from web-
@memj !ottawabronies Sounds awesome! :D All I would've had time to make this year was a Derpy Halloween costume (aka, paper bags). I doubt anyone would have gotten that either. xD

@nightbreak Did the original MLP series have as much cartoon violence as Friendship is Magic or any at all? I noticed quite a bit of that in the new series, e.g., when the ponies fight the manticore in the first episode, and when two ponies drop a piano on Twilight. (On an unrelated note, how in the world does a pony play a piano with hooves?) And that's another thing about bronies: the huge amount of fan content you guys put out (fanfiction, art, videos, music, etc.). As a fanfiction writer, what is it about Friendship is Magic that inspires you to create this content?

@eaglehooves Did you cleanse the book with holy fire?
-
@purplephish20 No... The ones she colored for me are actually sitting on my nightstand. Even if they are G3, I still got my sis to notice ponies.
-
@eaglehooves *snarf* Yeah, people don't get the difference. "It's the same show!" "Oohhh, no it's not." That's like saying the A-Team movie was the same thing as the TV show.
-
-
@mergemm As to the creative endeavours: Holy crow, do we have people in this fandom who'll create just about anything. Mind you, that's the Sturgeon's Law at work: 90% is still crap, but the 10% that's good is worth dying for. I'm glad to be back in pony fandom, though, because it was where I started 18 years ago (though a much worse writer) and I know the territory, even with new characters to work with.

!ottawabronies @mergemm Hurrah. Whichever you prefer. I am rather apathetic towards conversation medium.
Tuesday, 01-Nov-11 02:08:30 UTC from web -
@nightbreak Thanks for the info. An obvious difference in quality (and style!) there. I presume these days Hasbro is also concerned with producing quality programming to drive viewers to their Hub network, rather than producing content solely to sell merchandise.
Monday, 31-Oct-11 16:44:39 UTC from web-
@mergemm Yeah, back then it was 'sell toys', with Transformers, GI Joe (for guys), and MLP (for girls). I'm a fanfiction writer. Have been for 18 years. This was the show that started me, back in the 90s. I was terrible (thankfully, they hadn't invented the Internet back then) but learned, and went into anime and television fandoms, doing multiverse & crossovers. Now I'm back in MLP again.

@anubis418 I did notice a few gags and references clearly aimed at an older audience. Like the yakety sax bit, which they used twice if I recall correctly.

!ottawabronies @cakewalk That would be great! Sent you a reply. @frolicintheashes Thanks :) No reason why we can’t chat here or at the convention. I’m just choosing to focus on older bronies as far as sources go. @djmidli sounds good :)
Monday, 31-Oct-11 12:29:52 UTC from web -
@nightbreak Interesting! From what I gather the majority of bronies are only fans of Friendship is Magic and have either no knowledge of or interest in previous iterations. Can you tell me in what ways this latest MLP cartoon differs from the previous ones? !ottawabronies
Sunday, 30-Oct-11 16:14:06 UTC from web-
@mergemm !ottawabronies I currently go to Carleton, so I can meet up with you sometime there if you'd like. I'll send you an email :)
-
@mergemm The new one focuses a lot more on the fact that they are ponies and has completley taken out all humans or aspects of them. They are also while still kind of girly independent and not like the classic barbie appearance/lifestyle(except rarity in a sense). FiM also manages to wiggle in the moral of each episode in without it being forced down your throat and still manages to have some fun that while kids won't get it the older generation will be giggling and trying to hold back from bursting into fits of laughter(guilty of it with the huff the magic dragon reference)
-
-
!ottawabronies @mergemm I would be quite willing, but you did specify 18+, so I can't. But still.
Sunday, 30-Oct-11 18:34:04 UTC from web -
@mergemm Well, let's ignore the *original* episode for a second: Escape from Midnight Castle, even though the FiM pilot mirrors that episode in so many ways as a callback. The SHOW MLP and Friends, which ran in the mid-80s was cheap animation, with plenty of errors. There was much more danger back then. One of the taglines in fandom that remembers the old eps is "Dream Valley Is Trying To Kill You". But it's also distinguished by the need for Hasbro to just sell ponies without worrying about animation quality or song quality. Here, see for yourself in the episode Quest of the Princess Ponies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZkJaxHU920

@anubis418 Absolutely! I’m interested in speaking with as many Ottawa bronies as I can.
Sunday, 30-Oct-11 16:11:37 UTC from web -
!ottawabronies @nightbreak @djmidli I'm focusing on why the cartoon has become this popular with a demographic so different from the target audience -- popular enough to spawn this brony subculture. Ideally real names would be used, but if there’s concern with that I’m willing to work around it. I do want to make it clear that I’m not out to portray bronies in a negative way. The premise just struck me as curious and I’m sure others would find it intriguing as well. I did commit myself to watching the entire first season when I decided to write this article; I think it’s a cute show with great production, characters and an interesting world. So the appeal is not lost on me :)
Sunday, 30-Oct-11 11:42:20 UTC from web-
@mergemm sounds like a great idea. I'd love to help out if you still need people.
-
@mergemm Well, I can tell you that I came into the new show because I had been a fan of the 80s show when I was, oh, 8. :P I'm sort of a brony-anomaly in that, but it's interesting to be in a fandom from the ground up like this. Trust me, bronies are not alone. Just go to Fandom bananas and see the 'subcultures' that have evolved around any show. !ottawabronies.

!ottawabronies Hi all. I’m a journalism student at Carleton University working on an article about bronies for a magazine writing course I’m taking this semester. I plan to pitch the story to an actual publication once I’m a bit further along with my research. I’m looking for Ottawa-area bronies (ages 18 and up) to be a part of the article. I’ll be at the convention in November, but I’m interested in chatting and/or meeting with any who are up for it before then. If you’d like to be involved, please email me at mmonett2 [at] connect.carleton.ca. Thanks!
