@mrdragon Entirely possible. It's 'cause mysql configuration is horribly inconsistent. Sometimes a buffer is a onetime thing, sometimes it's per thread, with no indication either way

@mrdragon I forgot that myisam key buffers are allocated on a per-thread basis and then set it to 256mb. Don't do that.

@mrdragon I'm at about half for both CPU and RAM right now. I haven't gotten aggressive with optimizing yet though. The database needs a proper mysqloptimize since the import this morning.
