Turns out the RAM was totally accessible, I just didn't realize that section of the case lifted up like that. Which is a good thing really, because the hard drive and optical drive I was trying to remove from it DID turn out to be totally inaccessible due to the aforementioned non-standard screws. I took a closer look at them, and they appeared to have once been phillips screws. The grooves in the head had been sanded down completely and then they welded some kind of shell around that. In any event, the RAM installation was at least a success.
