@ceruleanspark I doubt I'd ask even if I were 90% sure they were in general conversation since, whether or not they are, I'd adjust my interaction with them according to their behavior, but, if I could tell that asking them kindly out loud would queue others in to the fact that this person works well with a different approach then I can see that helping possibly.
