@pony In my experience, when people do ask, it's not to your face. As an example, in high school, my year went skiing for the school trip. I was having fun, but I was terrified of the actual skiing (A fear of heights will do that). Anyway, we go for the lessons and I'm terrified but I eventually get down the slope. It was fun. I get back to the top and one of my friends pulls me aside. apparently while I was going down, the instructor had turned to the rest of my classmates and said "so, is that kid retarded or what?" so yeah, usually people just talk about it behind your back.
