@beatstrings my favorite and the most sensical one is the theory that when Ash saw Ho-oh in the first episode of the anime, that Ho-oh granted Ash eternal happiness as it's stated in the Pokédex, and Ash's idea of eternal happiness is adventuring and catching/battling Pokémon.
