The one thing I love about the musical numbers in Friendship is Magic is how they are actually relevant to the plot of the episodes they're in, they can be used to tell part of the story in montage form, as in "Suited for Success", or actually occur withing the context of the story, as in part 2 of the pilot and "Over a Barrel". Most cartoons used musical numbers to cut away from story telling and felt like pointless filler similar to the cutaway gags in Family Guy. And that makes MLP:FiM that much more awesome for it.
