@tiffany Yeah, it is sort of a reflection of her character. I personally think it's not that she doesn't care, it's just that throughout the series she's always been the first to put up a tough front, so even when her beloved dies her instinctual response is to not show any kind of superficial weakness. Mal is a lot more attached to everyone to people he cares about (which comes through in a lot of his dialogue and that one big monologue he had later in Serenity), and even though Shepherd wasn't technically part of the crew in the film he had definitely made enough of an impact on Mal to evoke that kind of response from him.
