  1. @rarity I actually never read it as a student, I'd just heard about it and decided to try it out since it seemed to have garnered lots of praise (and I've actually enjoyed a fair share of 19th century literature so I wouldn't be out of my element reading it). Honestly, the psychological viscera of the novel is certainly greater than the standard of the time based on what I've read, but good lord is the novel blandly written. The symbols are heavy handed and obnoxiously intrusive, and Hawthorne's actual prose lacks colour and personality in my opinion. I appreciate what the book did for literature at the time but I cannot for the life of me get into or enjoy his author's voice.
