@bitshift What I've /heard/ is that a good hard surface does most of what the expensive pads do, even those with fans. For my second laptop I'm considering getting something light and thin and sturdy so it can fit with the laptop easily in its case (like maybe hardboard i.e. what brown clipboards are made out of).

@minti The length of a machine word is something you get to choose when designing a processor. The most popular architectures just happened to choose 8, it became widespread, and now we're stuck with it.
