  3. All right, my current profession ain't payin' the bills like it used to. This means I need to seek new work. I'm really lazy, and prefer to remain unmoving unless I'm practicing martial arts. What's a one year certification program that will get me an easy job where I can sit on my apples all day? Like, the less effort I have to put forth, the better.

  5. @starshine Let us know, d00d. Have any ideas about where it would happen?

  6. @madflavors I used to think music wasn't for me, either. I thought 'Man, this is just something that's not in me', I was so wrong. Someone finally sat me down, and presented to me in a way I could understand, and I ran with it. I've only been reading for about four years, and playing for two, but now I can sight read, and write for four part harmony with any problems. If you really want to do it, you can do it. It's not easy, but it's not hard either, it's just a lot of work.

  8. @madflavors Music is a language, approach it like you're learning a new language. Pace yourself, and take it easy. At first, it is overwhelming, because when you listen to music, it's like hearing a conversation in a second language you're not very good at, but after a while, you'll start picking up more and more, you'll start hearing time sigs and tempos, then chord progressions, be able to name them, be able to pick up on the key, etcetera. It is a language, it takes a while to learn, but it is very doable.

  9. @petalbasedweaponry Yes! A horrible light blue, it's vile. I keep it in my closet so I don't have to see it. I could repaint it. I've painted a double bass before, and that's a lot more work than painting a violin.

  10. @zach121k Going from the bass clef to treble clef or vice versa is like going from shifting in left hand drive to shifting in right hand drive. Shifting with my right hand, easy peasy, shifting my left hand oh my god we're all going to die.

  11. @petalbasedweaponry It's a really ugly, cheap made in China violin. It's the gaudiest colour of blue I've ever seen. I've taken some pictures of it, but haven't spent my roll of film, so I haven't gotten the negatives developed. If I remember this conversation when I do develop the negatives, I will post pics!

  12. @loak I have this weird habit of befriending violinists. I work in the music biz and have more violinist friends than I do guitarists or piano friends. I usually seem to get along with violinists.

  13. @zach121k I actually bought a violin. I was poking around some music stores, checking out basses. I think I want to upgrade to an Engelhardt ES1, but to my ears an EC1 (which I had to sell when I moved 'cause it wouldn't fit in my car, boo!) sounds just as good. One of the stores had a violin for $35. I was like 'Holy crap, a $35 violin, I MUST HAVE IT!', so I bought it. I'm used to bass prices, and the cheapest bass you'll find is $500, so seeing an instrument from the same family for $35 blew my mind, and I had to have it. I don't play it 'cause I make it sound bad and the treble clef is weird, but I have it.

  14. @zach121k I know a few violinists, I really like the instrument. I always liked getting violinist to play with my piano trio. Jazz violin has got to be my favourite style of music.

  16. @elind85 Yeah, I've heard some takes on Just one of Those Things that push like 180, but I like to write for jazz violin. You write for jazz violin too fast and it sounds like bluegrass.

  17. @petalbasedweaponry I can't think of any songs from MLP that would work in a jazz style. Most of them are too fast or poppy to work in jazz.

  19. @petalbasedweaponry I have a habit of writing jazz arranges of songs I like. This may happen with MLP.

  20. @petalbasedweaponry Isn't a cello played on the bass clef, too? I don't know. I play stand up bass and that's it. I really don't know anything about any other instruments.

Thursday, 30-Jun-11 14:55:02 UTC from web in context
  21. @petalbasedweaponry Yeah, me too. It looks like a double bass, but a lot of people don't know the difference between a double bass and a cello, so I'm thinking the animators may have went with a large stringed instrument and decided it was a cello.

  22. So does Octavia play the double bass or the cello? Looking at her instrument, it gets wider toward the bottom, which is indicative of the double bass. And if she plays the double bass, which is played on the bass clef, why is her cutie mark a treble clef?

  24. Go into work and they tell me 'Go home, we don't have anything for you to do'. Usually, an ideal situation, but now it's sappin' my pony toy fund. Oh well, it's time to PONY ALL DAY.

  25. @flutterguy93 I wish I could have pony dreams. In the last dream I can remember, I was going around and using a pistol to euthanize cats that had leukemia. It was really horrifying.

  26. In ten years Equestria Time, where do you think the Mane Six will be? Rarity in Canterlot, Dash with the Wonderbolts, AJ still workin' the farm?

Thursday, 30-Jun-11 01:15:48 UTC from web in context
  27. @emperormiloth I have a very AJ-eqsue hat, sort of. At the least, AJ would approve of it.

Thursday, 30-Jun-11 00:51:39 UTC from web in context
  28. Guys, news no one cares about; I've decided AJ is my most my most most most most most favourite of the Mane Six. Since I like them all so much I can't have a 'least favourite', or even lesser favourite. So AJ Is my Most most most most most favourite, and it goes all the way to Pinkie Pie, who is my favourite.
