  3. @mk well, so much for that nice idea: querying the drive with 'hdparm -r' it tells me 'readonly' is *not* set. Then how come e2fsck cannot actually write its repairs (and is even ignorant of that fact)?? More and more #: I have never seen this behavior before!

  6. @mk This morning, with more entries in the cron log (and even the system log) I'm starting to notice some odd patterns... 1) after ONE manual ntpdate update 23:24 , I am seeing THREE updates about an hour later (all at the same time 00:30) in syslog - but only TWO entries in the cron log - after that, no more entries. 2) Meanwhile, at 23:02 (BEFORE the automated ntpdate) an EXTRA crond was started, while the old one apparently continued running. 3) From then on, the automated updatedb is successful for the NEW crond while the old crond (not surprisingly) encounters a locked mlocate.db file. Both crond's do ONE ntpd update at 00:30 - it's not clear where the third one (recorded in syslog) at the same time came fery hour one successful and one failed updatedb - but nothing else (no ntpdate) is recorded in the log... # # #

  7. well, I'm stumped. I added two lines too root's crontab (one to run updatedb at boot time, one to run it daily) but there's no sign this is actually happening. There's also no log that records anything of cron; I even tried to enable Syslog via /usr/builtin/etc/log/log.conf but I see no /var/log/syslog appearing. If I run the 'updatedb' command manually I can tell it has run because the timestamp of the database changes - this also doesn't happen after reboot, so it looks like the job isn't running at all. But why?? # !linux

  10. !linux !debian is there anything I can do to make debian recognize a brand-new USB3 thumb? It's recognized without a hitch on Dennis (LMDE) and not at all on Nikola (Deb Jessie); kernel used on Nikola is not teh latest (which doesn't work) but still newer than that on Dennis. # # this doesn't make things easy...

  11. /me is #: the already somewhat 'suspect' external drive (suspect because its twin sister died recently) caused File Manager (Thunar) to crash an hour or so ago - and it was remounted read-only. But fschk found nothing wrong, and after reboot it's mounted and writeable... So: more suspect even than it was. But what could have happened? Anyone? !debian !linux

  12. @mk first, an intermediate: try to REinstall virtualbox... no luck with that. So, UNinstall (this also takes virtualbox-qt and virtualbox-dkms with it) and REinstall by selecting *-dkms, which then wants the other two as well. The process first tries to STOP kernel modules and restart them - but that step FAILs; then it runs virtualbox-dkms (just as I did) - seemingly it does the same, and NO vboxdrv appears in /etc/init.d/ ... but it finalizes with a stop kernel modules and start kernel modules and this time that step succeeds! Sure enough, I no longer get an error message when starting VirtualBox, and a VM *can* now be started. # but where is vboxdrv now??? very #

  17. weird problem with Firefox (on LMDE): menu bar activated, two windows. In teh "first" window, everything works. In the "second" window (I don't remember which one was actually *created* first) menu bar (key or mouse), menu button, right-click menu and scroll wheel all do not work at all. Nothing found searching. Finally, from the first window I right-click on a link and choose 'Open in new window'. In *that* window everything works, too. So I end up dragging all tabs from the 2nd window to the 3rd window - and now everything works as normal. [BUG] # #
