I've made the experience that getting back your #freedom (e.g. wiki, social services (1)) always involved a #cost (things not included in the initial plan), but in the end it was worth that, for me. Why ? #Redundancy is good and who are we to kick someone elses #freedom ? e.g. if I would have to make a choice in this case I would select (1) instead of (2). Why? the open registration in (2) is a potential #spam issue. If your reason is that more people see it, users can subscribe to several groups and would get the message posted in any of those 2. The only "problem" would be when they write a dent and for that there is the Autocomplete plugin. We can't expect users to know #all existing groups (though there's a list) besides that we also let them their #freedom to make 1 or more parallel groups. That the current #statusnet software may be perceived as not supporting all of them (though there's a plugin for that) is for me not so a strong argument. I like more that there can be devlopped #sub-cultures by making those parallel groups AND I like this suggestion of yours: http://quitter.se/notice/2148392
