This is a very interesting device made in #Germany ! A full featured mini-computer, #fair produced and #privacy in mind. Similar to the #fairphone this device is built to last for years. Parts of it (like processor, or sthe screen) can be changed by the user only using a screwdriver.

In den Tiefen einer abartigen Windows-Welt ...
Es gibt bei mir einen Service, den nur ganz gute Schulfreunde von früher bekommen. Die dürfen ihren #Laptop bei mir abgeben und ich mache den wieder flott. So kam eine alte Freundin bei mir vorbei, die jetzt als Journalistin arbeitet und meinte ihre wichtigen Recherchen wären auf dem Laptop und der wäre inzwischen unerträglich langsam. Ich schaute mir die Windows-Möhre an und stellte fest, dass sie mit Malware verseucht war. Der Internet-Explorer quoll über mit Toolbars und unnötigen Reklame-Plugins. Erstaunlich, dass da kein Verschlüsselungstrojaner zugeschlagen hat. Ich säuberte den Laptop erst mal von der Mal- und Bloodware. Dann schaltete ich die Windows-Updates wieder ein, die seit über einem Jahr nicht mehr eingespielt worden waren. 164 Updates wollte das Ding runterladen und das dauerte ewig. Dann sollte das Ding neu gestartet werden. Gesagt getan und beim runterfahren sollten dann 110 Updates installiert werden. Ich traute meinen Augen kam aber da stand, dass es 2 Tage dauern würde und ich auf keinem Fall vorher ausschalten sollte. Das kann ja wohl nicht sein - #WTF?! Es lief dann ziemlich schnell von 1 - 30 hoch und ich dachte, die #Zeitangabe ist wohl grob verschätzt. Irgendwann war ich müde und legte mich hin und ließ den Laptop über Nacht laufen. Am nächsten Morgen war er auf 90 und meinte das noch 1 Tag notwendig wären ...
Ich stelle mir gerade vor man braucht das Teil dringend und muss wegen der Updates 2 Tage warten. So etwas ist doch unzumutbar - warum tun sich das Leute an?
Zum Abschluss habe ich noch die Windows-Partition verkleinert und unaufgefordert ein #Linux draufgepackt. Damit da notfalls noch was vernünftiges drauf läuft :)

User Experience. It took quite a while for me to figure out why WiFi / WLAN wasn't working. Reason? Access Point (AP) was configure to use n standard. But the old device only supported g standard. Guess what, Xubuntu, doesn't indicate any kind of reason for this fail. Just just tries to connect for a long time, and then fails. Yet another example of engineering, how to totally fail and even fail to give any kind of feedback or reasonable error message. After wondering for a while, I enabled gn mixed mode, and tada, everything started to work. Yet, the network list nicely shows the n network and prompts for password, even if the device naturally can't join the network- Thank you once again for great engineering guys. - Phew. #Ubuntu #Linux #WLAN #WiFi #fail
