#totw Well, their names do get passed down with family members. Maybe they're destinies are inherited as well? Twilight Sparkle derives from her mother's name Twilight Velvet and her father's name which is something Sparkle. Besides, her name is somewhat vague on what her destiny could have been. She could have had the destiny of making the best sparklers ever which would be known for their glow at the twilight portion of the day during ceremonies.

#totw How does naming your foal Derpy Hooves/Ditzy Doo ultimately give them a bubbles cutie mark? I say it works as a heavy guideline, but they are the ones that can choose their destiny if they work hard at it kind of like Harry Potter not wanting to be in Slytheren. That's my thoughts.

#totw That's silly everypony knows that late at night when the filly or buck has gone to sleep a magical space frog falls from the medicine cabinet and draws graffiti in permanent marker on the ponies butt to symbolize their name. its tradition. though i don't really get why ponies feel its their special talent :/ i mean whats fluttershys special talent "being a butterfly?" no they just flutter and are very shy. that's space toad has his work down to a science! :D

#totw It doesn't seem to be their name that determines their special skills, but their environment that determines their name- their environment growing up, of course, also influencing what their special talent will be.

#totw Not really. See: Rarity - special talent: finding gems. Pinkie Pie - special talent: parties. Fluttershy - special talent: animals. Cheerilee - special talent: teaching. I mean, there are some nice coincidences (Rainbow Dash - special talent: go fast and make rainbows) but there's enough counterexamples to the theory of the name affecting the cutie mark to render it moot.

#totw I mean, look at the Apple's. Big Macintosh has an Apple cutie mark, same with Applejack and Granny Smith. All named after apples *Exception to Applejack, but she has the word "Apple" in her name*. I think Applebloom should realize that she is going to get an apple cutie mark from her family

#totw We see that some ponies do change their name based on what they become known for in Apple Family Reunion. Namely Aunt Applesauce got her name by losing her dentures in some apple sauce . So maybe it's possible ponies change their name to match their cutie marks in some cases while in other (e.g. Pinkie Pie) they keep their old names.

#totw Unless the name is too literal to be it's cutie mark. But in most cases, it's passive that parents give their foals the names on what their family is really good at. Generally like farm, weather, fashion, or any profession that catches their fancy. Unless your about to take a turn for your life and change your name, wait, do they even do that in equestria? Who knows.

Maybe the pony doctor just "knows" the ponies cutie marks based on the foals when there tiny. Or doctor hooves uses the sonic screwdriver to find out the future cutie marks. Or when the name is chosen, it decides the ponies fate. OOOOOOHHHHHHHHH! TIME TO WRITE SOME FAN FIC! #totw
